About the Author

Michelle G. Craske received her PhD from the University of British Columbia in 1985 and has published over 100 articles and chapters in the areas of anxiety disorders and fear. She recently completed an advanced level text, Anxiety Disorders: Psychological Approaches to Theory and Treatment. Currently, she is professor of psychology in the department of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and director of the UCLA Anxiety Disorders Behavioral Research Program. She continues to serve on the DSM-IV Anxiety Disorders Workgroup Subcommittee, which is charged with revising the text that accompanies the diagnostic criteria; is a consultant to various national organizations in their efforts to develop and disseminate practice guidelines for panic disorder and other anxiety disorders; and has been awarded NIMH/NIH funds for the study of anxiety disorders. Her research focuses on furthering the understanding of fear and anxiety and in developing more effective treatments for the anxiety disorders.

David H. Barlow received his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont in 1969 and has published over 400 articles and chapters and over 20 books. His major interests over the past 30 years has been the study of anxiety and its disorders, and developing new psychological procedures for practice settings. Prior to his current position as Professor and Director of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders and Director of Clinical Psychology Programs at Boston University, he founded clinical psychology internships at Brown University and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is the recipient of the 2000 American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology. Other awards include the Career Contribution Awards from the Massachusetts and California Psychological Associations, and a MERIT award from the National Institute of Mental Health for long-term contributions to the clinical research effort. During the 1997/1998 academic year, he was Fritz Redlich Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences in Palo Alto, California. He is Past-President of the Society of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association, and the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy. He was also Chair of the American Psychological Association Task Force of Psychological Intervention Guidelines, a member of the DSM-IV Task Force of the American Psychiatric Association, and was Co-Chair of the Work Group for revising the anxiety disorders categories.

An Effective & User-friendly Treatment

As a cognitive-behavioral therapist, I have used this workbook with several patients and highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from generalized anxiety disorder. The techniques presented within it are effective for up to 70% of social anxiety suffers and I can personal it attest that they have proven highly effective for all of my patients who have used it. Although best used in the course of treatment with a cognitive-behavioral therapist, individuals can effectively employ the techniques presented on their own. Techniques presented include: Challenging Dysfunctional Thoughts (specifically overestimating the probability that bad things will happen and underestimating your ability to cope), Physiological Relaxation (including progressive muscle relaxation), and imagery exposure (facing fears / worry through visual imagery in order to break the cycle of verbal worry and avoidance). This treatment program does require work and persistence, but the can have tremendous payoffs if followed.

I really like this book because of its content and structure. It's very easy to implement with clients and I am not giving it a five because I want to wait to see if my clients are able to utilize the skills and if their anxiety decrease.

About the Author
Linda A. Mooney, Ph.D., is an associate professor of sociology at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. In addition to social problems, her specialties include law, criminology, and juvenile delinquency. She has published over 30 professional articles in such journals as Social Forces, Sociological Inquiry, Sex Roles, Sociological Quarterly, and Teaching Sociology, in addition to authoring several books. She has won numerous teaching awards, including the University of North Carolina, Board of Governor's Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award.

David Knox, Ph.D., is professor of sociology at East Carolina University, where he teaches courtship and marriage; marriage and the family; and sociology of human sexuality. He is a marriage and family therapist as well as the author or co-author of 12 books and over 100 professional articles.

Caroline Schacht, M.A. in Sociology and M.A. in Child Development and Family Relations, is Instructor Emeritus at East Carolina University. She retired from a career teaching sociology to become a certified Romana's Pilates instructor. She is co-author of several textbooks and balances her time writing and revising, teaching Pilates in her home studio, and writing children's verses and songs for her grandchildren.

Required reading

When I read "fact" books I look for descriptive writing, adverbs and adjectives that describe. Every time I come across descriptive writing I mentally break the sentence or paragraph down into facts. This book didn't have a lot of hard facts, there were soft facts, like "some people eat broccoli". I was really disappointed in the book, although the class I took was very good and I learned a lot.

    James A. Speck, PE, worked as a regional manager of The Johnson Gage Company, Bloomfield, Connecticut, following a career in the fastener industry. He has trained and served as a technical expert in the Department of Commerce’s National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation program for fasteners and metals; presented numerous workshops and seminars on fastener fundamentals, fastener applications engineering, and screw thread technology; and authored numerous publications. He received his BS (1971) in business administration from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and an MS (1974) in management from the Hartford Graduate Center, Hartford, Connecticut, and he is a licensed professional engineer in Connecticut.

    Great study tips and an invaluable supply of practice questions.

    Cramming for a geo bee is really tough. There's a near infinite amount of information about the world for you to try to digest - but precious little information about what a bee is really like and what kind of questions they really ask. "The Geography Bee Complete Preparation Handbook" covers those issues better than anything else out there. While there is some good geography overview source materials here - this isn't what makes this book special. The study guides are good, but can't compete with online games like geonet or purposegames. The real strength of this book is the articles about what the bee is really like and how to go about structuring your study plans and practice sessions. That and the 1001 practice questions. These questions are true to the style and feeling of real Nat'l Geographic GeoBee questions. Time and again I find I have trouble cooking up a good supply of these types of questions for study sessions on my own. Having a big supply like this on hand is invaluable. My only real complaint is that there isn't more of them. I'd like a book of 10,001 questions!

    All in all, this is the best and most useful geography bee study guide I've seen (and I've seen most). Highly recommended for anyone getting prepared for a geography bee.

In 1822, at age 36, Glass escapes, finds his way to St. Louis and enters the employ of Capt. Andrew Henry, trapping along tributaries of the Missouri River. After surviving months of hardship and Indian attack, he falls victim to a grizzly bear. His throat nearly ripped out, scalp hanging loose and deep slashing wounds to his back, shoulder and thigh, Glass appears to be mortally wounded. Initially, Captain Henry refuses to abandon him and has him carried along the Grand River. Unfortunately, the terrain soon makes transporting Glass impossible. Even though his death seems certain, Henry details two men, a fugitive mercenary, John Fitzgerald, and young Jim Bridger (who lived to become a frontier hero) to stand watch and bury him. After several days, Fitzgerald sights hostile Indians. Taking Glass's rifle and tossing Bridger his knife, Fitzgerald flees with Bridget, leaving Glass. Enraged at being left alone and defenseless, Glass survives against all odds and embarks on a 3,000-mile-long vengeful pursuit of his ignominious betrayers. Told in simple expository language, this is a spellbinding tale of heroism and obsessive retribution.

    Michael Punke serves as the U.S. Ambassador to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. He has also served on the White House National Security Council staff and on Capitol Hill. He was formerly the history correspondent for Montana Quarterly, and an adjunct professor at the University of Montana. He is the author of Fire and Brimstone: The North Butte Mine Disaster of 1917, and Last Stand: George Bird Grinnell, the Battle to Save the Buffalo, and the Birth of the New West. His family home is in Montana.

    High Adventure that Delivers!

    The word REVENANT is defined as "a person who returns, especially supposedly from the dead." There could be no better title for Michael Punke's high spirited western novel. In these pages, we discover historical fiction at its best. Though the book was published some years ago, it seems to be garnering more attention with a re-release, as well as anticipation of the movie THE REVENANT starring Leonardo DiCaprio, due out in January 2016.

    At any rate, the story centers around legendary "mountain man" Hugh Glass. The time period is the early 1820's, when traders and fur companies were searching out domains in the Rocky Mountains, and in the present day states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, and the Dakotas. It is also a time only 18 years removed from the return of Lewis and Clark from the Pacific and the triumphs of the Corps of Discovery. Word had spread throughout our young nation of the vast areas of lands where a fortune might be made through the hunting and trapping of animals. The lust for furs, hides, and pelts to propitiate European buyers played a major role in this westward expansion. Thus, endeavors like The Rocky Mountain Fur Company sprang into existence and vied with one another to gain strong footholds in prime furbearer sections of the enormous Missouri Territory.

    Often, financial backing was based out of St. Louis, where teams of men were organized to venture up the Missouri River, as well as its tributaries. The book centers around one such team led by a Captain Henry and included such members as John Fitzgerald, Jim Bridger, and Hugh Glass. Along with surviving the harsh elements of the Wild, these men also had to defend themselves against hostile Indian tribes like the Arikara and the Blackfeet. In addition, there was great competition from the Spanish and French that added to the urgency of securing tracts of land rich for trapping.

    Much of what we know of these early "mountain men" is centered around both facts and legends. Hugh Glass, Jedediah Smith, and Jim Bridger were three of the first actual white men who ventured into the Rocky Mountains and beyond. In THE REVENANT, we are given an exciting glimpse into a very early and virgin American West. It is no secret that Hugh Glass was a central figure at the time, and he was indeed attacked by a grizzly bear and left for dead by his party. Punke does such a marvelous job of weaving fact and fiction together, and he elaborates on this merger at the novel's end.

    What I found most fascinating about this moving saga were the rich backgrounds we are given involving the histories of the major characters. We are treated to accounts not only of Glass, but also of Bridger, Fitzgerald, Henry, and the French voyageurs. The descriptions of the bear ordeal, of Glass's stoic determination, of the Indian attacks, and of survival in the brutal wilderness itself were absolutely compelling. Punke's knowledge and visceral prose make for story telling at its finest. If you enjoy films like JEREMIAH JOHNSON and books like UNDAUNTED COURAGE or CROW KILLER, I believe you will find THE REVENANT to be a splendid read that is well worth your time....

    Looking forward to seeing the movie next. Loved the book.

    I'm really enjoying this book and I wasn't so sure I would, given what I thought it would be about. But its written in such a way that it holds my interest well and appeals to me. Normally a book about fur trappers and the wilderness wouldn't sound like something I could get into. But the events that set it off and the beautifully descriptive writing about the landscape and people and action captured my interest fully. It has lots of excitement and near peril and danger to keep it exciting. And for me, a non-fiction lover the best part is that its based on a true incident of heroism in the history of the American West back in 1822. A blend of a few different subjects that I am crazy about, the old American West, history, true stories and crime.
    It's about betrayal and revenge, but also so much more. The main character Hugh Glass was a real life fur trapper and frontiersman who led quite a life and I'll probably be looking for more to read on him.

    Meh writing was only saved by its amazing storyline

    The storyline told in the Revenant is amazing, but the writing leaves alot to be desired. I would have given this book a 5/5 if the writing hadn't been so bad. When reading this story, the author wasn't able to bring the landscape to life and it felt as though alot of the descriptions were rushed and told by someone without eloquent writing. I'm not a person that cares if a story is artistically written or gets bent out of shape by meh writing (I love the Dragonlance Chronicles and those stories are by no means masterpieces of prose), but I was even distracted by the lack of eloquence. It was almost like reading a history book without the detail that you would expect a history book to focus on. I can't believe I'm saying this, but just go see the movie. The movie has a slightly different story, but this is one of the rare times where I think the movie was better than the book.
