Questions answered, more exciting

This installment is better than Book 1, in that it pretty much answered all of the questions I had after Book 1, and it was more exciting. I wanted to keep believing that everything was going to work out fine, but 2 things hindered that belief: the title, for one, and the fact that eve Colin kept feeling wary and apprehensive after the passage of time. And their houseguest (no spoilers in this review, sorry) was acting pretty shady anyway. The one thing that also makes this stand out - whether you see it as good or bad - is Ms. Knots' depiction of her shifters. Almost every writer's works that I've read about M/M shifter romance portrays the wolves as being the same pretty much across the board. These wolves are very different. Not that I dislike it, just takes some getting used to. The only things I didn't like were the constant, repeated use of the nickname "peanut" for the baby (it was getting really old really fast) and the fact that the love between Colin & Ben seems a little unbalanced. Ben definitely cares, but not telling his mate that he loves him, in a romance story no less, bothers me a little.

Another must read!!!

Let me start off by saying this is an amazing series and I'm only 2 books in. I can't wait until book 3 comes out!!! Book 2 left off on a huge cliff hanger so be prepared.

The story picks up where it left off with Ben and Colin on the run from Black and Ben's pack. Colin is dealing with his pregnancy and it's sweet to see how Ben takes care of his mate. They are a very loving couple and you want to see good things happen for them.

The evil Black isn't in this book but his presence is very much made known. He's the kind of character you want to claw his eyes out. I'm surprised but not shocked by Dr. water's involvement. Black is pulling all the strings but Ben, Colin, and we the readers don't no what his intensions are just yet.

This is a great series. It has romance suspense and a lot of heart. Knots has me on the edge of my seat waiting for what will happen next!
I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. That being said I enjoyed the book so much I would have bought it. A must read series!!!

Well written but still letting the omega be way way to trusting and not question anything, like in hiding how would the doc find you and why wouldn't you keep Any kind
Of eye on him. Not questioning Any thing he dose or says isn't a normal thing for beings that are with child. Especially the first one. Letting the omega be Way to simple
Minded. Saying all this I'm still looking forward to the 3rd book in the hope the general finally gets his and Ben gets his way to trusting pack back.

Great book

I was introduced to Ohara about two months ago. Have read three novels. I am about 40% through the short stories. Many of the stories have a similar theme but they are still great stories. Ohara is one talented writer.

I have always loved John O'Hara, and these stories are great. I read at least one of them every night before I go to bed. I would put him up there with F. Scott Fitzgerald, maybe with Hemingway.

More Human than Human

“Wait…KoRn is a satanic band?” That was my initial thought when I found out that Brian Welch had left KoRn. I was confused: it was a song on ‘Issues’ that made me resolve to leave an abusive relationship; it was listening to KoRn that made me want to stay sober. Was I missing something? What happened? I would have given my eye-teeth to have been a ‘rock star’, hugely successful no less, and I couldn’t think of one reason why anyone would want to let that go.

I binge read his first three books over a weekend and what emerged was a somewhat sad, albeit familiar, story of a boy who grew up angry and with poor self-esteem, and by hard work and a stroke of good fortune started his early adulthood with fame and wealth complete with all of the privileges and indulgences that accompany it. He was given the golden ticket only to find it took him to a place that was abysmally void. But, as he was to find out, that was the ride, not the destination. He told his story honestly, and at times allowed stabs of unresolved emotion to emerge above the surface, bearing evidence that this was not an autobiography told in full; this was the beginning.

WMEWO is what happened during the in between, the life he negotiated with his new found Faith. This is how he fought to be a good father, a successful entrepreneur, continue to engage his talent as a musician, and most of all, be a happy person, and how none of that came easy.

I was overjoyed to read about his journey back to KoRn, and the way he can look at his absence not as God taking him away, but as God preparing him to go back. It’s very touching to read the stories of him praying with fans alongside his band mate and brother through Christ, Fieldy. Of course ignorant fans would mock them; it can be overwhelming for those who don’t know to stand in the presence of the Lord.

I appreciate the candor he brings to this book, and that he has retained his humor. He shared some deeply personal stories about financial mishaps and near ruin. The challenges of being a single father to his daughter were heart wrenching, but I couldn’t help but find myself thinking how lucky she is to have a father who won’t give up on her, or their relationship.

His Faith is a driving force for him that he is eager and unashamed to share. Be you Christian or not, reading about his life so far, his ability to fall, to persevere, and to rise again, is admirable.

As for me, I have learned that Brian didn’t have one reason to walk away from a ‘rock star’ life...he had a million. And why he came back was backed by a force far greater than money, fame, and possessions. I love to see life come full circle.

Not that many people lay themselves open the way Brian does. Most people would rather not admit the things he admits, or try to dress them up in some way, knock the edges off to make it more palatable. I so appreciate Brian's writing for this reason. I've read a lot of rock bios and most of the time people can admit to some dirt but rarely take on the emotional tolls they had to pay, the books are written more for entertainment, to gawk inside the life of a celebrity and all the crazy stuff they did, than to be inspired by anything. I like looking into Brian's heart and appreciate his showing it. That's courageous and inspiring in and of itself. He doesn't have to be a superhero with all the answers and everything plastered with a happy smiley face to make this book inspiring. It's inspiring to know you can be in the dirt and cast your eyes to the sky and know something in your heart beyond this human realm is there for you.
I hope Brian keep writing about his maturing spiritual journey so I can read about it while I'm on my own journey.

Head's message to Millennials

I have always loved Korn and when I was selected to review this I was super EXCITED! I have been a Korn fan since I was a little kid rocking out to Shoots and Ladders (I had an awesome older sibling!). Brian "Head" Welch, was the original guitarist for the bad and left the band when he got sober to raise his daughter. The book's main focus is Brian's journey as a new Christian and recovering addict. It is a very down to Earth presentation of the ups and downs that come with turning your life around.

I really did enjoy the book. Head's voice was real, down to earth, and even though he admitted to many mistakes in the book he definitely handled it with integrity. I think that anyone who is trying to turn their life around, a new Christian, a recovering addict, or just your average joe, can benefit from this book. Mainly because when an addict becomes sober and or when a person is trying to improve their relationship with the God of their understanding; it is a difficult road that most give up on before they reach the finish line. Everyone can benefit from hearing an open and honest representation oh what turning your life around is really like! I also commend him for being so open to share it with the world.

I also think that as a millennial, this book is very relate-able. You see Head's daughter (Jennea), went through a lot of similar problems as most of the people in our generation. It is really awesome to see both parties (millennial and parent) taking personally responsibility. I also loved hearing about the mission work that Head and other members of Korn. It is a short read, its a little over 200 pages. But it if you are a reader, you will definitely finish it in a few days.

Andy Ferguson is a graduate of the Chinese Language and Literature program at the University of Oregon. He has lived in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan, and has traveled extensively in East and Southeast Asia since 1978. He has organized and led numerous tours to visit Chinese Zen history sites. Fresh, original book on the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism

When I first received Tracking Bodhidharma in the mail, I quickly scanned its jacket for details about this book I had been very excited to read. I groaned the moment I saw the words "Travel Narrative," expecting the book to be some half-baked story about a Zen enthusiast backpacking through China.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

Tracking Bodhidharma is Andy Ferguson's delightful story about how he traveled throughout China to learn about the legendary founder of Zen, Bodhidharma. The book's subtitle, A Journey to the Heart of Chinese Culture, plays a large role in the the story, as much of the book examines modern China. Ferguson, also the author of Zen's Chinese Ancestors, weaves a fascinating tale about contemporary Communist China, Chinese Buddhism recovering from the ravages of the Cultural Revolution, Emperor Wu, and of course, Bodhidharma.

Ferguson writes with a true storyteller's voice, and as the author of Zen's Chinese Heritage and a fluent Chinese speaker, he has the chops to write about China. As a practitioner of Buddhism for many decades and a frequent visitor to China, rest assured that Ferguson is fully qualified to write this book.

Like few Zen titles, Tracking Bodhidharma is addictive; I tore through its 350 pages in three or four days. For someone who knows very little about China, other than Taoism and Chan, I was fascinated to learn about modern China. Since much of the book follows Ferguson as he visits temples and other holy Buddhist sites, it's both fast-paced and extremely informative.

My favorite parts of the book concentrate on Emperor Wu, who appears as little more than a side note in Zen history. Wu's influence on Chinese, and almost all East Asian, Buddhism was vast; on average he built 10 temples per year. Talk about a loyal patron.

As this suggests, Emperor Wu, commonly known as the "Bodhisattva Emperor," was a fervent supporter of Buddhism, but I was shocked to learn, even a monk at times. I say "at times," because the quirky emperor would ordain--during which time he would literally stop ruling China, thus sending the country into political chaos--and then eventually return to the palace after the court had bribed the Buddhist church for his return. Okay, "bribed" might be a strong word, but that's pretty much how the story went.

Absolutely fascinating!

Ferguson goes on to contrast two types of Chan--imperial, embodied by Emperor Wu, and Bodhidharma Chan. Although the two occasionally dovetailed on certain issues like vegetarianism and farming, overall they had different religious (and political) agendas. This is best personified in the famous story of Emperor Wu and Bodhidharma's first, and only, meeting. I'm referring to the time when Bodhidharma zinged Wu after the latter asked, "What is the true Dharma?", to which Bodhidharma replied, "Vast emptiness, nothing holy." This is only after Bodhidharma told Wu--the great "Bodhisattva Emperor," mind you--that he didn't gain any merit by supporting Buddhism, a claim that deeply challenged Buddhist doctrine, practice, and tradition.

As this tale illustrates, Bodhidharma was an iconoclast, but his true influence on Chan and all of East Asia transcends this episode; it's virtually unfathomable. That's the focus of this book.

Overall, Tracking Bodhidharma is a great read. It's a enticing page turner, which is not a description you often hear about Buddhist titles. Unlike some of the other books I preview, this one is actually a perfect choice for the beach. Bet you never thought you'd hear that about a Zen book!

I loved the author's other book on the Zen Heritage, and looked forward to his travel insights. Tracking Bodhidharma is a mixed bag of a book. It starts off as a very interesting glimpse into contemporary China from someone who is obviously very knowledgeable as an experienced tour guide, but after a while it becomes one bus ride and one lost ruin after another. Some of this reflects the dismal state of modernity's bulldozer, destroying and "improving" as it goes. The reader certainly gets a feeling of the endless ups and downs of Chinese history over millenia, but the overall picture is wearying and depressing. We lose interest in the search for Bodhidharma and the author's theme of Imperial Way Buddhism versus the anti-authority Zen of Bodhidharma. One reason for this is that there is nothing in the book on the author's own spiritual journey or understanding -- it is all him as camera or tour guide. Very few readers are that interested in the very detailed ins and outs of Emperor Wu or the placement of this lost temple or that; for better or worse, readers are interested in the struggles of human beings like themselves. We get little meetings with Chinese people and foreigners wandering around China, all of which liven the book up. But where is the author himself? We get virtually nothing of his interior life in this book.

The other problem with the book is that there are attempts here and there at bringing in the theme of whether Buddhism in Japan had responsibility for the militarism that led to World War II. Given that the author spends time in Nanjing (Nanking), there are good reasons to consider the topic, but the author seems to be trying to make some grand statement that his uncovering of Bodhidharma's whereabouts is the key to the understanding of the future of Asiatic imperialism/militarism. It comes and goes fitfully through the book, but the author doesn't say anything that others haven't said better, and the quality of the argument is not exactly helped by the sudden arrival at the very end of the book of an attack on the Kyoto school of absolute emptiness (in one page), World War II civilian bombing by the allies equated to the rape of Nanking (half a page), and Theodore Roosevelt's imperialist doctrines (one paragraph). To suggest that these topics require -- and have received -- books of their own to consider their validity is an understatement.

The best thing about the book is the short pieces on various Zen masters, reminding us of the complex and deep history of Zen. That's why his other book is so good, and better. In spite of not really being enthusiastic about this book, it's obvious Ferguson would be an amazing and indefatigable tour guide to China. I'd sign up.

The story and influence of the chief "evangelist" of Zen in China

This is a masterful monograph on the key figure in Chinese Zen, a person who ought never have been overlooked. Bodhidharma was the "evangelist" of Zen (or Chuan) in China. This book looks into his life and his influence, providing an invaluable resource for any interested in the history of Zen.

The the first of two other key figures who are woven into this history is Daoxuan, Chinese Zen's foremost historian and the biographer of Bodhidharma; of his writings Ferguson makes extensive use, for they are the most reliable and lease "mythologizing" accounts of Bodhidharma's life. The other main historical personage in this book is Emperor Wu. Inevitably, religion and philosophy has a political dimension. This book traces the development of Zen in China as a political movement. Furthermore, it analyzes more modern history in the East in the light of this early politicization of Zen.

Finally, the book looks at influence of Zen in the arts: poetry, fine art, and prose. The contributions of Zen in the arts cannot be understated. Since the late 18th Century, Eastern art has been influential in the West as well. So this again provides a historical perspective that is necessary to understanding the encounter of the two cultures.

For those with little experience or knowledge of Zen or Buddhism in general, this book will provide an invaluable entryway. For those with deeper experience and knowledge, this book will provide a new perspective -- perhaps more grounded in history, and less mythological or ethereal. Highly recommended for any with a historical interest in Zen or Buddhism in general. Those with an interest in the history of Buddhism in the West might also want to check out Batchelor's excellent The Awakening of the West: The Encounter of Buddhism and Western Culture.

Spellbinding

My choice for pleasurable enjoyable reading is mystery novels; I read 1-2 a week. Two favorite types are cold case narratives and those, such as Ann Perry’s Thomas Pitt and William Monk series, where backstairs politics hamper the investigation. Christine Negroni’s non-fiction book “The Crash Detectives” melds both types into an enjoyable and fast-moving read.

Part of my pleasure in reading Ms. Negroni’s book is her storytelling skill when describing major aviation accidents since the 1930s. Momentum builds as she tells us about the incomprehension, confusion, and the cover-up following a mysterious accident. Trust in her investigative reporting builds as we realize the depth of her interviews and the more than 800 references in the book’s authoritative index. You will be unable to put this spellbinding book down until the end.

Author Christine Negroni and The Crash Detectives is a good read

Having been interviewed by the author for this effort and a current "Crash Detective" mentioned in the book, I am delighted at how Christine Negroni took a challenging and complex subject and crafted a thoughtful and well presented book. The sub-title pretty much spells out the premise of the work - "Investigating the World's Most Mysterious Air Disasters" and it certainly does not disappoint. In my 16 year effort of conducting an investigation into the worlds allegedly first successful mid-air high jacking and murder in history; Pan Am Airways Flight 229 Hawaii Clipper (Martin M-130 Flying Boat of the China Clipper fame) at the hands of two rogue Imperial Japanese Navy members, Negroni thoughtfully asked well conceived questions, looked for evidence, factual analysis and generally portrayed in accurate detail mine, and as I well other interviews, into this fine book. Her obvious expertise in researching and digging beyond the surface layers of evidence and getting to the often hidden minor details which may turn the trajectory of theory into a full blow fact are evident. I highly recommend this book and congratulate the author.

Great reading, timely, and very informative

An excellent, close-to-outstanding book about many recent air crashes, why they happened, and why they didn't. Among the evidence: the collision of two jumbo jets on Tenerife in 1977 was an example of "everything gone wrong" exacerbated by one pilot's desire to keep his on-time record intact; the crash of a sightseeing jet over Antarctica was due to bad preparation, bad documentation and governmental cover-up; nobody shot at TWA 800 over Long Island in 1996 -- the crash was most likely a flaw in the way fuel is stored. Among the myths debunked are that the disappearance of an Air France Rio - to - Paris flight over the South Atlantic had anything to do with terrorism.

Commercial flying has never been safer, but in the era of fly-by-wire and nearly total computer control of avionics and the flying process, new ills emerge. Some governments overstate their air-traffic systems' ability to follow aircraft in their space, which helps explain the multiple misstatements and incompetencies surrounding Malayasian 370, in a country where civilian and military control of aircraft are under the direction of the same government minister. Christine Negroni is our leading "civilian expert" concerning crashes like these, and CRASH DETECTIVES makes for lively reading. It is true that she sometimes indulges in sarcasm and humor, but in dealing with preventable ills like corporate greed and governmental cupidity, a light tone is not out of place. My only gripe is that the story of a Canadian jet that left Montreal with only half the fuel it needed to reach its destination had not been so disjointed in the telling. High recommendation.
