It is a nice book brushing up on basic mathematics, which you could easily have forgotten during your studies

Great for first year students

Biochemists don't traditionally have a strong background (or any in some cases) in math. I think Cornish-Bowden's book fills a niche for first and second year biochemists and I highly recommend it. For seniors the book is probably too low level, though seniors will find it a useful reference nonetheless.

Basic indeed. Too basic.

I have a deep respect for Athel Cornish-Bowden and his textbook wirting skills. His enzyme kinetics texts are the best on the market. This book is also clearly, lucidly written. The problem is, the depth of coverage is simply inadequate for contemporary biochemists. True, some working biochemists don't know even what is in this book, but future biochemists should be equipped with stronger math skills than presented here. Dr. Cornish-Bowden, if you are reading this, please do the future biochemists a favor and write a bigger, more detailed book on the subject. Do not forget more linear algebra and more statistics (preferably using R).

Amazing Uncharted Art

[[VIDEOID:66052936f2779ed320e6f0eb85f67c39]]I'm a big fan of Uncharted and the art so this book is pretty much a must-buy for me.

When it comes to video game art and concept, I feel that Uncharted probably has the most absorbing characters and environments. The main characters are quite likeable and memorable. The environments in the game are absolutely breathtaking.

The Art of the Uncharted Trilogy features the character and environment design for the first three games. It's a 192-page hardcover filled with wonderful art. Looking back at all the beautiful artworks reminds me of the time I first played the game. I was awed by the visuals, and I still am.

Interestingly, art from the first game had a more comic-like look and feel to them, e.g. line art for character designs. From the second game onwards, it went on to have more realism built in. You can see that in the progression of design for the main characters from the first to third game. Environment art also started to be more detailed.

The downside of the book is there should have been more art included. 192 pages are divided among the three games so actually each game just has under a hundred pages. A lot of artworks were left out for sure because The Art of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves by itself is already 272 pages. It's difficult to imagine how much artworks were left out for the first and third game, and how much more awesome this book could have been.

And because there's the dedicated artbook for the Uncharted 2, artworks for that game are duplicated in majority inside this book.

As a standalone book, it's definitely highly recommended to all the Uncharted fans and those who like video game art. I just wished I could see more.

It's gorgeous

A very nicely compiled art book, featuring art from all 3 uncharted games. Each page is made of a nice semi-gloss like paper. I especially love how they give some descriptions of the thought process behind each character when they were first being conceived. A must have for any Uncharted enthusiast and art lovers.

it's been great, the illustrations and some of the art is ...

An exciting package of all the three uncharted games, I just finished the trilogy once again, this time on PS4 and went through this book afterwards, it's been great, the illustrations and some of the art is astounding, mainly for the 2nd and 3rd uncharted game, I just wish there was a lot more of it, I missed on the uncharted 2 and 3 artbook because I was kind of a late buyer of PS3, I only bought it in summer 2012. And only now after getting ps4 for christmas this year I managed to go through all 3 games during the holidays and browsing through the book was a pleasure, it's a great companion for every uncharted fan. I would recommend it without a doubt !

About the Author

Calvin Long received his B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Idaho. Following M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from the University of Oregon, he worked briefly as an analyst for the National Security Agency and then joined the faculty at Washington State University. His teaching ran the gamut from elementary algebra through graduate courses and included frequently teaching the content courses for prospective elementary school teachers.

            His other professional activities include serving on numerous committees of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematical Association of America, and holding various leadership positions in those organizations. Professor Long has also been heavily engaged in directing and instructing in-service workshops and institutes for teachers at all levels, has given more than 100 presentations at national and regional meetings of NCTM and its affiliated groups, and has presented invited lectures on mathematics education abroad.

            Professor Long has co-authored two books and is the sole author of a text in number theory. In addition, he has authored over 90 articles on mathematics and mathematics education, and also served as a frequent reviewer for mathematics journals, including The Arithmetic Teacher and The Mathematics Teacher. In 1986, he received the Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching from Washington State University and, in 1991, he received a Certificate for Meritorious Service to the Mathematical Association of America.

            Aside from his professional activities, Cal enjoys listening to, singing, and directing classical music, reading, fly fishing, camping, and backpacking.

 

 

Duane DeTemple received his B.S. with majors in Applied Science and Mathematics from Portland State College. Following his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Stanford University, he was a faculty member at Washington State University, where he is now a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. He has been extensively involved with teacher preparation and professional development at both the elementary and secondary levels. Professor DeTemple has been a frequent consultant to projects sponsored by the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Higher Education Coordinating Board, and other boards and agencies.

            Dr. DeTemple has co-authored four other books and over 100 articles on mathematics or mathematics materials for the classroom. He is a member of the Washington State University President’s Teaching Academy, and in 2007 was the recipient of the WSU Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Instruction and the Distinguished Teaching Award of the Pacific Northwest Section of the Mathematical Association of America.

            In addition to teaching and research mathematics, Duane enjoys reading, listening to, and playing music, hiking, biking, canoeing, traveling, and playing tennis.

 

 

Richard Millman received a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in Mathematics. He is a professor of mathematics and was director of the Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology, which supports STEM outreach in K-12. He was formerly the Outreach Professor of Mathematics at the University of Kentucky, where he was involved in both preservice and in-service teacher training for mathematics teachers.

            Dr. Millman has co-authored four books in mathematics, co-edited three others, and received ten peer-reviewed grants. He has published over 50 articles about mathematics or mathematics education and has taught a wide variety of mathematics and mathematics education courses throughout the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, including those for preservice teachers. He received, with a former student, an Excel Prize for Expository Writing for an article in The Mathematics Teacher and was a Member-at-Large of the Council of the American Mathematical Society. He was principal investigator and project director for ALGEBRA CUBED, a grant from the National Science Foundation to improve algebra education in rural Kentucky. He was the principal investigator of a Race to the Top grant from the Georgia Department of Education and another NSF grant, SLIDER, in which students use a curriculum based on engineering design in the context of building robots to learn eighth-grade physical science and math.

            Rich enjoys traveling, writing about mathematics, losing golf balls, listening to music, and going to plays and movies. He also loves and is enormously proud of his grandchildren, with whom he enjoys discussing the conceptual basis of mathematics, among other topics.

the book doesn't do a very good job of helping you translate problems for children

Do not buy a digital copy of this book. First of all, a digital copy does not come with a Pearson code because of publisher and licensing reasons. So if your teacher puts all of the homework onto the Pearson website, you'll have to pay an additional $100 just to do you homework. I learned that lesson the hard way.

As for the book, the book doesn't do a very good job of helping you translate problems for children. It gives you the general idea of the mathematical concepts in the body of the chapters, but covers much more complex problems during the homework. You'll really have to stretch you mind with this book. But that's not always a bad thing.

It has interesting visuals and examples from actual teachers. But the book has an odd teaching structure. The first chapter covers a wide variety of different concepts, but does not have enough consistency for practice. It was hard to study for my first test. Overall, not greatly impressed with this book. It was obviously written by mathematicians who are used to inputting formulas, but not teaching children.

Definitely buy an actual copy of the book, and buy it new.

This book is neither of those. Its very easy to understand and goes hand in hand with the lectures. I recommend renting it, which is what I did. The book I got is as good as new, and is usually cheaper that way even if you have to rent it for two semesters.

Really nothing here

The promise of theta healing is immense, but the vision of accessing our subconscious and unconscious minds seems to be missing from ThetaHealing's approach. The whole premise of re-discovering and re-connecting to who we truly are as expressions of the One Source is to integrate the wounded parts of our self (Ego). "Belief work" from this book actually strengthens the Ego with virtually every "download" starting with the phrase 'I know...'

The suggestion of supplements is completely generic and without any regard to an individual's possible need. And the writing style in describing diseases and disorders is overly simplistic and lacking any depth of someone who has been duly educated and properly trained.

Healing is not anywhere as complicated as listing science's labels (diseases and disorders) of what is essentially disintegrative energies run amok in our integrative energy systems (the human body). When we choose to align our hearts and our minds with that which we truly are (Love), healing happens - no matter what the issue is labeled as.

This book has lots of good information. Several diseases and disorders mostly focusing on the more common issues. Still a good reference for helping with certain problems. I just got it but I use it just about everyday, even if it's just to read over what I read the day before. Organized well easy to find what your looking for.

Nikolay Voutchkov, PE, BCEE, is with Water Globe Consulting, LLC where he provides independent technical advisory services in the desalination field to public utilities and private consulting companies and investors in the U.S.A. and abroad. With more than 30 years of professional experience, 14 as a Board Certified Environmental Engineer, Mr. Voutchkov has completed a wide range of engineering, planning, and applied research projects in the field of desalination, conventional water supply, wastewater treatment, and reuse. Between 1998 and 2009, he was a Chief Technology Officer for Poseidon Resources, a private company specializing in the development of large water infrastructure/desalination projects. Mr. Voutchkov is the author of Desalination Engineering: Planning and Design.

Very good and practical operation manual

Due to our geographical location and climate, in Spain we suffer severe water scarcity and an irregular, unpredictable climate that even reaches desertification in some areas. Therefore we have been dealing water availability with coordinated actions covering surface and subsurface water resources management, water sanitation, water treatment, desalination and reuse.

That means to invest heavily in hydraulic infrastructures which are meant to ensure the necessary water resources, regardless of the weather conditions. Over the last years, desalination has been one of our main investment programmers (12 RO plants with more than 1.000.000 cubic meters per day) as this technology has notably increased its efficiency and competitiveness thanks to technological improvements incorporated within the process and to the international leadership of the Spanish companies in the sector.

But nothing of this would be possible without a sound plant operation knowledge oriented to fulfill our business objectives: Satisfy users' water needs; Maximize operations' efficiency and quality; Prevent the environmental impact of our actions; Contribute to economic growth and environmental improvement of the regions where we operate.

From our experience the book has been a great surprise as it includes comprehensive explanations about all operational aspects of desalination plants, from the first step to the last, covering in one book all the process involved. They are wide, accurate and clear, very easy to read and understand.

The book has a great approach as an Operations and Maintenance Manual, as it is focused on everyday problems. It goes straight to the point avoiding extreme technical or analytical boring expositions. Particularly helpful are the data and ideas shown through the troubleshooting chapters at the end of every topic, including thumb rules and ratios to guide operations in order to avoid problems.

As a suggestion for the more than likely future editions -or future manuals-, we think that main future challenges for desalination plant operation will be focused on minimize costs by improving energy consumption efficiency -at least in countries with high energy costs- and operations oriented to avoid any environmental impact.

The book provides practical guidance that is useful for day-to-day plant operation and facility optimization, and presents the information in a manner that is clear and easy to follow and implement. The book is not limited to any particular aspect of desalination plant operations, but rather covers all key aspects and encompasses treatment facilities most commonly used in desalination plants worldwide - from intake and pretreatment to reverse osmosis separation and post-treatment of the product water.
There are a number of books on the market addressing the planning and design of desalination facilities, but this book is unique. It is a one-of-a-kind compendium of the state-of-the-art in desalination plant operation and maintenance, and is sure to become an invaluable source of information for those involved in the desalination industry.

A must-have for any desalination or reverse osmosis plant

This volume is a must-have for any desalination or reverse osmosis (RO) plant.

From my perspective as Operations Manager of a large scale desalination plant, this eagerly awaited reference text is an important tool for industry and of practical use in all technical aspects of operational activities, from training to process troubleshooting and equipment maintenance. It encompasses the full range of variability in RO plant design and therefore has applicability across industry while complementing its predecessor "Desalination Engineering: Planning and Design".

Voutchkov continues to be a key contributor on an international scale to the dissemination of information in the water industry and in particular the areas of RO and desalination.
