More of an "invitation" than a "reference manual"

The Brown-Driver-Briggs is much more than a dictionary.

Although I agree with the reviewers who regret that this edition doesn't have the Hebrew-English index in the back, I never even thought to look for this in all my years of owning this dictionary until I read a review saying it was missing.

Here is a brief summary of what you get in the BDB, as it is most commonly abbreviated, and some things you need to know.

Learning to use the BDB is often included in many Hebrew coursebooks, since it is almost like learning a language in itself.

First of all, the words are NOT listed in alphabetical order. They are listed in alphabetical order under the HEADING OF THE ROOT. So, every word which is formed from the root "KTV" (such as Miktav, Ktav, and Ktovah) will be listed in alphabetical order starting with the root itself (prefixed by the "root" symbol borrowed from math), "√כתב," in the "Kaf" section. So knowing how to identify the root consonants of a word is a must before you can use this dictionary.

However, this is an essential skill for understanding any Semitic language anyway, since Hebrew, Arabic, or Aramaic word meanings are just vowel shapes and helper prefixes, with a consonant-based meaning.

Secondly, you will need a reference grammar like Gesenius handy in order to understand what Brown Driver Briggs is telling you about the word. The grammatical information given is very specific and often includes unusual forms such as Hithpa'al and Hothpalel.

Thirdly, when you first look up a root, you will see it compared with its Semitic equivalents in Arabic, Aramaic, Akkadian, Syriac, and Ge'ez (ancient Ethiopian), as well as the occasional Ancient Egyptian or Coptic word. So knowing the Arabic alphabet is a good introduction to being able to use the Comparative Semitics tools the dictionary offers.

Right now I am learning the Ethiopian alphabet (called the Ge'ez Fidel) and the Syriac script (the BDB lists Syriac words in the Serto (western Syriac) script, as opposed to Estrangelo (eastern Syriac)). Akkadian and Egyptian words are not listed in cuneiform/heiroglyph form, but instead are written in English-letter transcription.

Fourthly, there are many, many abbreviations used in the dictionary. Almost all of these abbreviations are explained in the front of the book, right after the Preface. It might be handy to put a sticky marker there, or a bookmark, for easy flipping back and forth to look up an abbreviation.

Fifthly, Greek is used throughout the dictionary. The most common example is the letter "ψ" used to abbreviate "Psalms." However, words or phrases in Greek are not uncommon. Less common are Latin and German insertions or titles of books.

Sixthly, the dictionary is rife with Scriptural references illustrating the various forms and usages of the word.

Seventh, manuscript names are also included. This information can be ignored by the beginner (I do.) These are the funny looking symbols such as old Fraktur-style German letters in a big font sometimes followed by a Greek word.

Eighth, the definitions of the words are usually written in italics, interspersed among all the complicated symbols and Scriptural references found under each listing.

Because the BDB is so complicated, it is extremely useful. It is also just one volume, as opposed to 6-volume sets like some dictionaries, meaning it is accessible to the beginner.

Some people are overwhelmed by the complicated information presented in the BDB. They know the Hebrew alphabet, but don't know how to identify the root of a word. Or they don't speak any other Semitic or scholarly language other than Hebrew, so all the comparative Semitics data is useless to them. For such students, a pocket dictionary might be more useful and much easier to use.

I want a deep understanding of the Hebrew Bible. With all the raging controversies surrounding its origins and meaning, I find it extremely useful to have so much information accessible about the etymologies of words and the comparison with other Semitic languages. I feel like if I can learn to read these other languages, I will be able to understand the hidden story behind Scripture which has been so hotly pursued ever since the birth of High Criticism in Germany in the late 1800s. So the BDB feels like an invitation to me, showing me in an attractive visual format the various important elements of Comparative Semitics and textual criticism with which I must become familiar if I want to have a deep understanding of the Hebrew Text and form an opinion about its origins.

Missing Pages

I thought this was a good deal, and was very helpful in class, until today when we went to look up a word and found that pages 395-426 were miss entirely from the book. Of course, discovering this is far past the return date, so I can't really do anything about it. I would warn you to check to make sure all the pages are present and return it if it's missing any. Otherwise, it is exactly what it's supposed to be.

14th Printing July 2012 - Absolutely Wonderful Reference Book

I ordered the in February 2014. I am very familiar with using the BDB Lexicon as a reference tool as I am studying and teaching myself Hebrew. I was cautious because of some of the 1-star comments that claimed the text was poorly copied and hard to read, or that a group of pages were missing. I finally took a chance and ordered the book.

I was very pleased to find the book has wonderfully printed pages - realize that the original is over 100 years ago so the type setting font is more compressed than currently preferred. The ink to page contrast is very readable; it is not hard to read. All the pages appear present. The missing pages comments must be from a particular printing mistake. All three indexes, Strongs # to BDB, Hebrew verb roots to BDB and Aramaic verb roots to BDB, are found at the back of the text. To top everything off, the tan and green hard cover looks beautiful.

This book is accurately represented. The price was incredibly affordable. I would recommend this to anyone wanting their own copy of the BDB Hebrew-English Lexicon.

This is a great book for kids that will be visiting Disney World.

This book was not what I expected. I thought it was going to be about things adults could do to increase the amusement of children while visiting Disney World. Instead, this book is for children to increase their own enjoyment of visiting Disney World. The book is for the child to plan their trip, then to take the book with them during the trip. There is a section in the back for them to gather autographs from the characters. I love that it encourages a kid to read! It guides the child in determining what they may enjoy the most during their visit. It also sets the stage for the child to become even more excited about their trip: "10 days before the trip...; 9 days before..." etc.

The book is written in a manner that lets the child decide which portion(s) of the book they want to know more about without having to read the book from beginning to end. It is also good for children of different ages and reading levels; although, I believe it is probably not for children who are not yet in school. I suspect the child should have some reading ability before this book will appeal to them on a personal level.

I liked the way the book was presented so well that I ordered three more copies - one for each grandchild. I intend to give each child their own copy well before we leave on our trip and I intend to tell them that while the book is for "2016" the general information will be good for future trips. I am all for any book that will encourage a child to read and dream. It is good for them.

Great Tips! A Must Purchase for your WDW Trip!

I am so very happy I purchased this book. We will be traveling to WDW in September 2016 and although I have been to Disney before, many, many things have changed so I needed something that would provided updated, clear information on FastPass+, Advanced Dining Reservations, Hotel Selection and general overall guidance regarding the Disney Parks. I saw this book in store before purchasing on Amazon and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The colors inside of the book are great and I love that they have included pictures with many of their reviews. I also love the coupons that they included in the back of the book. They are going to be a great help when we are there. The tips and tricks that are included are awesome and I plan on using a lot of them when we travel to WDW. If you're taking a Disney Cruise, there is a small section in the back of the book for that as well. I'm not sure how good it is as I haven't looked at it, but just for an FYI. In the way back of the book as well, they have laid out a few pages for you to create an itinerary for your trip. It's perfect and gives you spaces for flight and hotel information, FastPass+ reservations and Advanced Dining Reservations. Although I had already booked our hotel and park tickets before purchasing the book, I really liked being able to read the reviews of each of the hotels and the differences in each of the Park Tickets. If you're looking for an excellent, overall travel book for Disney, this is the one to get!

My wife is a Disney Freak and buys this book as soon as it comes out every year. She uses it to plan our trips and they make the whole trip better. It lists everything you need to know about disney.

i once stood in a library and listened to a conversation between a libarian and a guy in his 40s he had asked the week b4 for a serious read a classic and she had apparently recomended metamorphosis by franz kafka it was stupid he said angrily all about some bloke who turns into a cockroach.well if you dont know what a metaphor is dont buy this book.however if you can stand having your face rubbed in the reality of sexual abuse and the way our society is complicate both by our elevation of abusers to the posistion of outlaws "bad men and women" and the way the media uses these crimes to titilate the public in the guise of information you will be wiser and sader 4 the experiance

just compare the glory hole massage parlour sex with the carrot and stick sexuality the media sells to us and the purile articles from the press with the more honest but equally repugnent child porn exchanged in dark hallways

truly our children have inherited the world we deserve.

Sotos' best since Total Abuse

I wish I could reproduce my full review of this book here, but it's longer than a thousand words and besides, it violates all kinds of terms that Amazon has set for its reviews. Sotos gives us the goods about the Sensation art exhibit, King Ian and Queen Myra, the back rooms of adult bookstores, prostitution in Chicago, you name it. It's all here, and it's all captured beautifully in its hazy, base, disgusting glory. Sotos writes about a part of society that few people are even aware of, and if they were aware of it, they'd probably wish they weren't. And that's where the power and importance of Sotos' writing lies, in the confrontation of discovering about parts of life you didn't know existed before.

This is probably the worst thing I have ever read. It's basically just Sotos' nonsensical, meanderings on child pornography and homosexuals using glory holes, interspersed with quotes from newspaper articles about child abductions and what not. I'm not sure what effect this is supposed to have on the reader, but I was pretty much just bored by it. It feels like just a bunch of random words about pedophilia and other disturbing subjects thrown together, with nothing really holding them together to give the reader something to focus his attention on. I expected this book to be disturbing. It wasn't. It was tedious. I couldn't help but skim over much of it. Upon finishing this book most people will ask themselves like I did "what was the point?" and "Can I have my (expletive deleted) money back?" Avoid this book like you'd avoid condomless intimacy with Magic Johnson.

With so little information about the original production of The Rocky Horror Show available, Bourton's book is a treat for any fan of The Rocky Horror Show. However, while his voice does perfectly illustrate his wonderful anecdotes, it feels as if there is no strong adhesive which holds together Bourton's wonderful adventure.
Grammatical and formatting errors abound, and it is clear that this book needs some heavy editing to fix its glaring problems. There is no spacing between chapters on the Kindle and no table of contents. The book also lacks the photos which are supposed to be included.

This book was absolutely fantastic! You get to kind of finally see what went on to create the biggest cult phenomenon in history, and from a perspective of the original rocky! I think it is definetly a book every die-hard rocky horror fan should read! I would rate it higher if there wasn't a 5 star limit.
