I ordered this book for my class in the US and I received an international copy. Initially, I was upset until I realized that this book is literally the exact same--only paper back and much cheaper.

This book changed my life.

Wow, what a phenomenal book. I like to read this before I go to sleep at night. It calms me down and I will read about different cost allocations as though I'm counting sheep. It's so soothing to see numbers all over the page. I don't know what I would do without this book. I would recommend everyone to buy a second copy to place under a firm pillow. I hear that some people can absorb material directly through this process. I never knew I lacked so much knowledge in cost accounting. I would have tried to apply my indirect overhead costs to the wrong activities had I not read this book.

i cannot recommend getting the kindle version of this book. Renting it for the semester set me back about $90. Books like this open like a PDF which makes it awkward to read for an extended period. Also, it can only be opened on the Kindle. Opening the book with your Kindle browser extension is not allowed for some reason. The second reason I don't like it is it doesn't come with access to Connect. If you've never heard of it it's website where your assignments and tests are. New books come with a code otherwise you can buy a code online. Not having access to Connect was not a surprise but the price to buy it was. Basic access was about $90. If you want access to the eBook too the total comes to $150. I would have been no better for buying an actual book which came with the Connect code.

Pankaj Ghemawat is professor of business administration at the Harvard Business School. He is the author of several widely influential articles on investment, disinvestment, and sustaining competitive advantage, and was formerly a consultant with McKinsey & Company.

Preface

This book grew out of my experience, over the last four years, teaching and then running Harvard Business School's required first-year course on Competition and Strategy My colleagues and I were dissatisfied with the strategy textbooks and disinclined to assign a mish-mash of book chapters and articles instead. As a result, I, along with some of them, began to write conceptual notes for our students. These notes, which have since been revised several times, constitute the core of this book.

Strategy and the Business Landscape has several distinguishing features.

First and perhaps most obviously, it begins with and maintains a historical perspective on the field of strategy This approach offers several advantages. It avoids imposing an arbitrary definition of strategy on the reader. Tracking changing conceptions of strategy can also help identify patterns in what might otherwise seem to be just the random churn of ideas. Most ambitiously, an understanding of the history of the field may foster an ability to sort through the continual barrage of new ideas—some good and others bad—about strategy.

Second, this book tries to be contemporary as well as historically grounded. Thus Chapter 2 begins by reviewing early work on environmental analysis, particularly Michael Porter's influential "five-forces" framework (which is standard practice), but goes on to discuss newer ways of thinking about the business landscape (which is not). Chapter 3 pursues a parallel line of development, starting with the early work on competitive positioning but culminating in the more recent conceptualizations of added value and rugged landscapes. Chapters 4 and 5 deal with dynamic issues—the sustainability of superior performance and the instrumental roles of capabilities and commitments—that most strategists have only begun to address since the mid-1980s.

Third, this book uses firm-centered, value-based logic to bridge some of the great debates about strategy. It addresses the debate about internal versus external focus by concentrating on the firm in relation to its environment, aided by the visual imagery of the business landscape. The debate about competition versus cooperation is channeled into the recognition that both kinds of relationships affect a firm's added value as well as its ability to sustain and appropriate some of that value over time. And the debate about the activity-system vs. resource-based views of the firm is dealt with at length in Chapter 5, which emphasizes both the complementarity of these two perspectives on strategy and the way in which they need to be extended.

Fourth, this book tries to be practical as well as rigorous. Key concepts are laid out succinctly (but with suggestions for additional reading in the notes). They are illustrated with rich examples, often drawn from consulting work. In addition, the process of actually applying these concepts to real-world situations is discussed in some detail.

Finally, this book focuses on business- rather than corporate-level strategy. While strategies at the corporate and business levels intersect to some extent Significant differences are also apparent in many of the management issues raised. In addition, corporate strategy may have less immediate relevance to most of the M.B.A. students taking an introductory course on strategy. Having said that, there are obviously a number of good readings on corporate strategy that can be assigned in conjunction with this book for a course whose scope extends to corporate- as well as business-level issues.

It would have been impossible to prepare this book without aid and support from a number of different quarters. My most obvious debt is to my coauthors on the individual chapters in this book, David J. Collis, Gary P Pisano, and Jan W. Rivkin. Each pushed the chapter in which he was involved to a new level. Each also provided copious feedback on some of the other chapters in this book, although none of the three should be presumed to agree entirely with the end-product.

I am also greatly indebted to the other colleagues with whom I have taught the Competition and Strategy course at Harvard. Should you this textbook if you're not a student?

This is a university textbook that might be relevant even if you're not a student. Read on:

By reading this book you get an insight into what is currently (or maybe recently) taught at HBS's business policy course. This is important because once this course was taught by Michael Porter. He wrote Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors and Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance several decades ago. They were seminal books then and Porter has had a major influence on the field of business policy and strategy. These two books are still very readable because they talk about fundamental issues, which just doesn't go away with time. However, since those books are over 25 years old some things will be missing. That is where the current book fits in. The HBS course is still heavily dominated by Porter's ideas but by reading this book you get a good view what the people close to Porter's ideas consider as useful additions to the two original books.

I would not recommend this book unless you've read Porter's two books. The current book is very brief and doesn't do full justice to the original ideas. I think this limits the potential customers to people in consulting, management, and academia that are really interested in the field of strategic management from a practical perspective. If you don't already know the field this book is not for you

About the Author

Rolf H. J. Schlegel, PhD, DSc, is a professor of cytogenetics and plant breeding with over 40 years of experience in research and teaching advanced genetics and plant breeding in Germany and Bulgaria. Professor Schlegel has authored more than 200 research papers and other scientific contributions, co-coordinated international research projects, and been a scientific consultant at the Bulgarian Academy of Agricultural Sciences for several years. He earned his master’s in agriculture and plant breeding and his PhD and DSc in genetics and cytogenetics from the Martin Luther University, Halle/S., Germany. His latest book contributions include Dictionary of Plant Breeding (2009), 2nd ed. (Taylor & Francis, Inc., New York), Concise Encyclopedia of Crop Improvement: Institutions, Persons, Theories, Methods, and Histories (2007) (Haworth Press, New York).

The only book you need to pass the CT registry with flying colors!!

This book is a God send! Thank you Mr. Demaio for creating it! Our facility is set to be ACR accredited by January 2013 and my manager pretty much made it clear that I gotta have my CT license or medicare won't pay for our patients. I was freaking out... I got the MIC book, but it was like 1000 pages long and that freaked me out even more.. I then stumbled upon this book and read the reviews on it. This was going to be a hit or miss mission I needed to accomplish. Mind you I also am working full time here. I studied the whole weekend for 12 hours straight and from 4-9pm every day for 5 days.. I just took to registry test to AND PASSED WITH 93%!!!!!!!! WOOHOOO!!! I first took the 600 questions online that come with the book to see where my level was at (68 %). I then went to the end of the book and studied all the definitions.. (Like literally memorized them). I then read and studied the whole book (from cover to cover). I then took the practice tests at the end twice. I identified my weaknesses and the night before I went over my practice tests again and the questions online that I flagged. There were a lot of identical questions on this book that were on the registry test. The anatomy illustrated in the book is all you need!
To my fellow procrastinators... You can do this! The book's questions and explanations are easy to understand, and they are harder than the actual registry questions! Good luck everyone.. if I could do it.. so can you! :)

Great study tool for registry.

So, do not be fooled by this book! The questions contained in it are not going to be verbatim what is on the exam. However, ALL the information for you to pass the registry are contained within. I used this book along with another online tutor site that costed nearly $200/yr and looking back after the exam, the book was most helpful over the site. Get the book, and READ IT! Dont focus on the questions so much--they're just a guideline as to what you should expect format wise on the exam. The questions will be like they are in the book. T/F, pick 2 or pick 3 or anatomy ID. All the info is here. Great book. Get it, study it, keep it, reference it. Good luck!

I bought this book, read it front-to-back, and took the 3 practice exams. Several questions on the ARRT CT Registry and cross-sectional images were identical to those in the practice exams. I studied using this book for approximately 40 hours and scored a 93 on the Registry. Highly, highly recommended. Spend the $50 and don't risk having to take the $400 exam more than once!

Ted Kluck is the award-winning author of a dozen books. He has played professional indoor football, coached high school football, trained as a professional wrestler, served as a missionary, and taught writing courses at the college level. Ted’s work has appeared in ESPN the Magazine, Sports Spectrum Magazine, and ESPN.com Page 2. A bi-monthly column for Sports Spectrum Magazine entitled “Pro and Con” won the Evangelical Press Association award for best standing column in 2003. He lives in Grand Ledge, Michigan, with his wife and two sons.

As lifelong football fans, we sometimes find ourselves pining for what we consider to be, the good-old days. Kluck has found a way to relive the experience of 1970s football by competing with others in something called the Odyssey Football League, an online simulation league where players are drafted from a certain year, teams are built and games are played against other teams that are put together the same way. In this case, Kluck and the other members of the OFL replayed the 1978 NFL season using actual players from that year.

I like I'd so much, I joined the league!

Ted has a very engaging writing style. The book is an extremely entertaining look at not only football, but society.mmits funny,witty, nostalgic, readable, and it has a lot of football in it. What else could you want?! And yes, I looked into the OFL (Odyssey Football League) after reading Ted's book, found that they had an opening, and joined. Go Grizzlies!
