About the Author
Ja'far us Sadiq bin Amir Mufaddal Saifuddin is the grandson of the 52nd Dai al Fatemi Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS). He is a graduate of Arabic literature from Cairo University and completed his Masters (al Faqih al Jayyid) at Al Jamea tus Saifiyah in Surat, India. He is also currently studying for a Masters Degree in Arabic Literature at ALESCO, the institute of Arabic Research and Studies, Cairo.

His background, education and experience have allowed him acquire a unique insight and perspective with wich he describes and interprets the features found in al Jame al Aqmar built in 519H/1125AD. The explanations offered in this study combine the masjid's features with its Fatemi philosophy and symbolism and bring its architecture vividly to life.

This book is compiled from a series of studies, translated from the original Arabic text, written during the restoration of al Aqmar.

This book is an amazing piece of work. The watercolor paintings, photographs and the depth and insight with which the author has handled the subject is beyond compare.
The Al-Aqmar masjid is like a secret book and the author has revealed the secrets of this building and explained every detail giving reasons. For example the masjid door is at 21 deg to the main street, the author explains its significance. However this book will be appreciated by those who have a love for Fatemid art architecture and literature. For those who love the lanes and by-lanes of Cairo. Other superflous readers may not be able to appreciate its merit.
All in all - its a collector's item. Every cent worth!

I have read this book and gone through it many times.And also i have seen al-Aqmar......the mosque in cairo which this book is all about it is a master piece and justifies the knowledge and artistic brilliance of the author who has put before us a great work.

Im a student of art my subject of interest is Islamic art in general and perticularly the art and architecture developed during the glorious Fatemi era in Egypyt. I found this book very informative.It elucidates some unique aspects of Fatemi arts which have remained covered till now.

About the Author
Maness grew up in Southern California and migrated to Texas in 1972. After a short stint in the U.S. Air Force, Maness earned a B.A with a double major in Bible and Counseling at the Criswell Bible College from 1978 to 1985. This was a time of dire poverty and much struggle. He went on to earn a M.Div. with languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth in 1990, 1,600 hours of clinical from the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo in 1992, became certified as a Suicide/Crisis Intervention Counselor for MHMR in the Concho Valley in 1991, and a D.Min. from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1997. He has received specialized training with the Texas Dept. of Human Services in Child Protective Services and with Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) in Cultural Diversity, Safe Prisons crisis intervention program, and in TDCJ's Post Trauma Staff Support team. He has traveled throughout the United States and to several countries including Belgium, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. He is the Senior Clinical Chaplain at the Gib Lewis Texas State Prison and a Certified Correctional Chaplain with the American Correctional Chaplains Association. He is also a member of the American Correctional Association, Lions Club International, the Evangelical Theological Society, and several other state and national organizations. Why the 7 wonders of the world change

This book is a wonderful read. Like the other reviewer says, it is exhaustively researched. Parsons tracks the guidebook's (GB's) development to scholars who accompanied Alexander the Great on his conquests. They wrote about local flora, fauna and customs. He discusses Herodotus' travelogues, still popular today, and other ancients' travel writings. He explores GBs' value to medieval pilgrims to the Holy Land, how guidebooks established Jerusalem as the "new Delphi," contributing to European civilization's transition to Christianity from Roman paganism. Parsons talks about how GBs publicized other journeys of discovery, the most famous example being Marco Polo's Travels, also the most famous travel book of all time .

Parsons writes an interesting and memorable narrative about GBs' role in social movements like the Grand Tour of Europe, Romanticism, mass tourism, canonization of modern sights like da Vinci's Mona Lisa and the enduringly popular destination for modern day pilgrims, Santiago de Campostella, a fascinating tale.

Parsons goes well beyond a review of historical fact. He comments with authority on guidebooks' contribution to modern culture.

Among other things, five stars means well written, coherent, fascinating, memorable and a good reading experience with some scholarly (not pompous, not ponderous) and intellectual dimension. Worth the Detour satisfies on all counts. For an armchair traveler, a committed wanderer or someone who likes a fun history about an interesting topic or all three, I recommend Worth the Detour.

My copy came from my library. I absolutely hate to say it because i got a lot of pleasure from this read. I do not begrudge Mr. Parsons one penny in earnings. Realizing that price sensitivity is a highly individual distinction, when it comes to my Kindle about ten bucks is the max i want to pay.

You'd think it would be comprehensive

I bought this book for a very specific purpose: To research the background of several guidebook companies I'd worked for, Frommer's, Fodor's, and Rough Guides. Sure enough, Frommer's is there, though dismissed by the author in a single paragraph of a dense 359 pp. book (exclusive of index): "To Europeans, the guides started by Arthur Frommer fit the cliche of what an American guide will be like." Okay, fair enough. Much of the book is devoted to ancient times. But Johnny-come-lately Rough Guides get two entire pages devoted to them plus references on five others (and this is in addition to even more ink devoted to Lonely Planet, which preceded them). Most surprising is that Eugene Fodor, who wrote his first guidebook in 1936 -- an 1169-page tome called "On the Continent"; it was published in England and included such later-to-become famous contemporaries as Arthur Koestler -- is not mentioned a single time, as far as I could find. Neither Fodor nor the hugely popular guidebook series he spurred is listed in the index; I skimmed the pages where a mention might be, based on chronology, and they are MIA from there too. I am not surprised by the author's condescension towards Americans and their guides -- I experienced it when I worked at Rough Guides in London -- but am baffled by this omission of a major series by the Hungarian-born Eugene Fodor. ~ Edie Jarolim, Ph.D.

Athanasius was a major figure of 14th-century Christendom. As the Bishop of Alexandria, spiritual master and theologian, he led the Church in its battle against the Arian heresy. The Life of St. Antony was very uplifting and encouraging. The Letter to Marcellinus really helped me view the Psalms in a different light. It was a great benefit to read this book. I highly recommend it to anyone searching for deeper understanding of the Christian life.

A rare business biography/classic by Alfred P. Sloan Jr.

Alfred P. Sloan Jr. was CEO of General Motors from 1923 to 1946. This book was originally published in 1964. Sloan is seen as the first person to have worked out systematic organization in a big company, planning and strategy, measurements, the principle of decentralization - in short, basic concepts of a discipline of management. This is a difficult book to review, since it is more a historic piece on GM's history and development from Sloan's perspective than an autobiography. It does not discuss the individual Alfred P. Sloan Jr., it discusses Alfred P. Sloan Jr. as professional manager. The chapters also come across as business school lessons in different subjects, ranging from general management through to accounting, marketing and compensation strategies.
The book consists of two parts. "Part One is an integrated continuous story of the main lines of General Motors' progress, involving the origin and development of the corporation's basic management concepts in the areas of organization, finance and product." It discusses the extreme growth and development of the automobile industry from the early 1900s through to the early 1960s. It also discusses the methods General Motors introduced used to manage the corporation (Sloan all through the book keeps emphasizing the concept of the corporation). He later became known as a committee-man, because he used different types of committees to get/keep various divisions talking and working with each other.
"Part Two consists of individually distinct sections dealing in some detail with engineering, distribution, overseas operations, war and defense products, incentive compensation, and other aspects and branches of the enterprise." This part of the book discusses in greater detail the different experiences and events during Sloan's reign as CEO. It discusses some very interesting subjects, such as the evolution of the automobile, relationships with dealers, World War I and II efforts, and personnel and labor relations. Chapter 23 and 24 are really the conclusion to this book.
Yes, this is a great book. It is a TRUE business classic. It discusses all the subjects involved in business from a CEO's point of view. I was amazed to see the amount of detail Sloan has gone through while writing this book, there are plenty of quotes from annual reports, memoranda, conversations, etc. However, some readers will be disappointed by the lack of insight into Sloan's personal life. This particular edition includes an introduction by Peter F. Drucker, who explains why this book is MUST reading for all MBA and business students, but also all people that want to be serious about management. Highly recommended. The book is written in simple business US-English.

Good, but getting dated

On the good side, this book has a great deal of information about the growth of General Motors, and it's ghost-written by a journalist, so it's easy to read.

Sloan was one of the first modern-style businessmen. He grew GM from a bunch of mechanical geniuses and seat-of-the-pants administrators to the biggest company in the world after World War two.

However, the U.S. auto industry was at the peak of its powers and was about to begin the long slow (but inevitable) decline. And unfortunately you can see why. In 1964 autos wouldn't last more than a few years, and were sold on the basis of the annual model change. It truly was a seller's market, and you can see how the problems of today stem from the attitudes of that time.

Sloan is at his best describing the period 1921-1929 when the industry fell into place. The thirties get little mention and the period after the war is treated as one long period with no developments.

Sloan is glib when it comes to showing off the attitudes of management of that time. Because GM couldn't sell high-profit cars during the war but instead did defence work, this "proves" that wars do not benefit business. There are two chapters, one on labor relations ("how we kept the hourly paid workers' wages down"), and following that, on executive bonuses ("must be kept in place").

It's a worthwhile read, but it's becoming more historical than instructional.

An industrial masterpiece

Alfred Sloan can tell it like no other. From the early days of GM to the time he retired, this book chronicles the issues that faced GM. Marketing, segmentation, labor relations, competition, and many other aspects of managing an industrial giant. If you like this type of book, this is a classic. Prefer the tales and hype of the net economy, then this one will probably put you to sleep, though there are lessons here that anyone can learn from.
