Uninspiring graphics

I have had to read the entire text for a course, and it is not a particularly interesting book to read - at times the author seems a bit verbose. Figures in the textbook are in black, gray and white - very monotonous. Most have a gradient background that fades from dark grey to white. This makes reading the book difficult at times, especially when the text in the figure is in the dark grey section. It would have been better to have no background at all.

The summary of key points is helpful, but the layout needs work. The Index does not include some important terms.

From Zero to Scripting in a Quick 100 Pages!

In less than 100 pages, the author gets you up and running with [Bash] shell scripting. The entire book is precise, clear, and well structured. There is no divergence from the topic or the lessons, only short tips on common errors, style, and convention. In some cases I did look elsewhere to figure somethings out, but that was my own need for differentiated instruction. As such, I enrolled in the author's course on Udemy, which is cheap (link below).

If, like me, you get distracted by implementation details and are looking for a book that will teach you shell scripting from scratch quickly (or quickly tie a bunch of disparate knowledge together), then this book is for you! I also highly recommend the Udemy course in addition to the book.

It's really great that you've provided a straight forward and ​practical introduction to shell scripting. I will recommend this to anyone having the same problem as me with more traditional [Bash] scripting tutorials, which is that they have some amount of divergence from actual shell scripting. While I really am interested in things like Processes, Streams, and File Descriptors; I get really caught-up in the implementation side of things. I can focus on implementation later, as I progress in knowledge.

Well presented and complete book.

I am not new to shell scripting. I've been doing it for 20 years and have felt quite confident in it.

Reading this, of course I found plenty that I knew already but there were gaps in my knowledge that I did not realize. This book is thorough in covering shell scripting and presents the material in an approachable and practical way.

I highly recommend this book for new and experienced shell coders.

Great book for learning shell scripting! I've learned so much by following all the examples and excises. It is kind of shallow but it is perfect for beginners like me. I've finished reading it and now am comfortable writing simple bash script. Ready to re-visit all the chapters.

Stories of the Same Sort

I didn't write the introduction to this one, like I did to Valancourt's reissue of Benighted, so hopefully Amazon won't consider it a conflict of interest for me to write this review. Prior to writing the intro to BENIGHTED, I'd read only a handful of short pieces by J.B. Priestley, so when I learned that, along with BENIGHTED, Valancourt had also gotten the rights to reprint this collection of his short weird tales, I was very excited to check it out, and it didn't disappoint. It's as charming a selection of stories as the full title (THE OTHER PLACE & OTHER STORIES OF THE SAME SORT) would imply, reminiscent of other charming weird British writers of a similar period, including E.F. Benson and some of Nigel Kneale, to name a couple of which I am particularly fond.

While all the stories in THE OTHER PLACE fall under the broad rubric of the weird or strange tale, only a few struck me as what I would call horror. Instead, they focus on inexplicable and dreamlike situations, visions, people thrust suddenly back in time. Those that do go for shudders do an admirable job, and are generally my favorite stories in the book. There are some really dramatic and incredible (if brief) descriptions of suitably weird monsters, especially in "The Grey Ones," which was my favorite story in the book, and deserves to be more widely known in weird fiction circles.

Lovely little book for people who love typography

This is a lovely little book (7" x 7") full of wonderfully creative examples of dozens of designers typographic letterpress work. The cover is produced on a letterpress but, unfortunately, the interior of the book is standard offset printing. Chronicle Books had no other choice, of course. However, some of the examples are lit is such a way that the subtle embossment of the letterpress process shows beautifully. This is a book for type fans but also is a rich graphic inspiration for all designers at 175 pages. Highly recommended.

very good collection, issues with seller

Pros:

Good stories, a great insight to historic comics of the 60's, and a nice thing for any comic collector to own

Cons:

Pages printed out of order(At least for my copy)

Pages 17 and 18 are switched, even though the numbers are in the right order. My only guess is that the numbers were printed before hand, and they printed the comic on the wrong side of each page. If I can get this resolved quickly, I'll boost it to a 5 star rating.

Retrospect

Reading Fritz the Cat after so many years, I was struck by how misogynistic and creepy R. Crumb is. There are some aspects of the stories that accurately reflect the time period, the drawings are still brilliant of course, and there is no arguing the influence Crumb has had on our culture in general. Having said that, Crumb no longer holds the seat of honor in my heart that he once did.

About the Author

Dawn Griffiths started life as a mathematician at a top UK university where she was awarded a First-Class Honours degree in Mathematics. She went on to pursue a career in software development, and has over 15 years experience working in the IT industry. Dawn has written several books, including Head First C, Head First Statistics and Head First 2D Geometry.

David Griffiths began programming at age 12, after being inspired by a documentary on the work of Seymour Papert. At age 15 he wrote an implementation of Papert's computer language LOGO. After studying Pure Mathematics at University, he began writing code for computers and magazine articles for humans and he is currently an agile coach with Exoftware in the UK, helping people to create simpler, more valuable software. He spends his free time traveling and time with his lovely wife, Dawn.

I would say that *for me* this one fits the best. I have completed Chapter 6

I have purchased close to half a dozen books for learning Android App development.
I would say that *for me* this one fits the best.

I have completed Chapter 6, and I could easily use it as an example to write a simple app for my local animal rescue by replacing drinks with pets. I did find the explanation on page 241 abou the OnItemClickListener to be puzzling. The authors writes that it is a nested class, but even Google's own documention says that it is an interface. I found the explanation at --- programmerinterview.com/index.php/java-questions/java-anonymous-class-example/ --- to be helpful.

I will be editing this review as I continue reading the rest of the book.

I skipped chapter 8 which teaches nested fragments and continued on to chapter 9 which develops a new app.

Because Google has switched over to Material as the new theme, the Action Bar icon pack is no longer available for download at the link mentioned on page 379 of the book.

I was able to find a download link that still worked.
Since Amazon won't let me put a link, I suggest Googling for Android_Design_Icons_20131106.zip

No matter what I did, the ic_action_new_event icon would not appear in the Action Bar.

I had to go to File --> Project Structure.
Then single-click on the entry 'app' in the left-side box under Modules.
Then in the larger middle box, single-click the Dependencies tab.
Then single-click on the entry that has the phrase 'appcompat'; my entire entry was com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3.
After that entry is highlighted, click on the red minus sign on the right-side box.

Android Studio automatically includes the Android Support Library v7 into a new project. Mine does. My Android Studio is 1.2.1.1

After you do this, take note of the last few paragraphs on page 378 in the book.

I found it wasn't necessary to remove com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3 from my project.
Make certain that all the items in menu_main.xml have android:showAsAction instead of app:showAsAction
Android Studio will draw red squiggly lines under each of them.
Ignore those red squiggly lines.
The app will run fine.

Great book. Highly recommended.

I'm almost finished with my second read of this new Head First book. It's an excellent introduction. Like the HF Design Patterns book, there is something about the detailed approach to conveying complex information that really does the job. It's engaging and progresses with those little steps, repeatedly, to drive home essential Android skills. I've been programming in Java for over a year, have taken four OOP courses, including Java, in college, and have read many books on Java and related topics. This works. It is not cartoonish by any means and a great first step; highly detailed, with arrows and explanations that leave no (beginner) stone unturned. Android programming is not that easy, to my surprise. But beware: you better know your Java.

Very good book for anyone who wants to learn Android development

Very good book for anyone who wants to learn Android development. As long as you already have a some experience working with Java this book is for you! It goes through a lot of things you wouldn't find in free resources found online. Each chapter of the book introduces a new project that is not only easy to follow along but also very helpful and relevant to the topic.

About the Author
Dr. Amit Mitra is Associate Dean in the College of Business and Professor in the Department of Management at Auburn University. His research interests are in the areas of quality assurance, quality management, regression analysis, warranty analysis, applied statistics, and multicriteria modeling. Dr. Mitra has published numerous articles, some of which have appeared in journals such as Management Science, Decision Sciences, Journal of the American Statistical Association, International Journal of Production Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, American Journal of Mathematical and Management Sciences, European Journal of Operational Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Computers and Operations Research, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, Quality Engineering, and International Journal of Quality and Reliability Management. Dr. Mitra is also the author of the book titled, Fundamentals of Quality Control and Improvement , Second Edition, Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, 1998, which is used both nationally and internationally. He has conducted short courses for professionals in Total Quality Management, Quality Assurance, Statistical Process Control, and Design of Experiments, and has also assisted with implementation of statistical process control in industries. A sound introductory text

This book could serve as the text for an introductory course in Quality Management and Control at the junior or senior level. If an engineering or business undergraduate can afford only one course in Quality, then this would be a suitable text for that course. The level of mathematics can be well managed by students not particularly good at analytical skills.

Amazingly helpful book, will use for future jobs and life

This item is non-expendable for Industrial Engineers and Operations Management. Statistics incorporated into improvement applications; there are some relatively sophisticated ideas in their utilizing probability distributions and such. But the best thing about it are the Chapters on Control Charts... simple tool but seems extremely effective in counter-acting many problems in manufacturing/service jobs.

Hope more people get this book to (possibly) improve our world more.
