Sunrise Over Fallujah, by Walter Dean Myers

From Walter Dean Myers comes a powerful and timely novel about the heroics and horror of war---a gripping companion to FALLEN ANGELS.

Robin "Birdy" Perry, a new army recruit from Harlem, isn't quite sure why he joined the army, but he's sure where he's headed: Iraq. Birdy and the others in the Civilian Affairs Battalion are supposed to help secure and stabilize the country and successfully interact with the Iraqi people. Officially, the code name for their maneuvers is Operation Iraqi Freedom. But the young men and women in the CA unit have a simpler name for it:

Review
Robin's parents aspire for him to go to college, but following September 11, he feels compelled to join the Army instead. By early 2003, Robin has completed Basic Training and is deployed to Iraq where he becomes part of a Civil Affairs Unit charged with building the trust of the Iraqi people to minimize fighting. Civil Affairs soldiers are often put into deadly situations to test the waters, and Robin finds that the people in his unit, who nickname him "Birdy," are the only ones he can trust. Robin quickly learns that the situation in Iraq will not be resolved easily and that much of what is happening there will never make the news. Facing the horrors of war, Robin tries to remain hopeful and comforting in his letters to his family, never showing his fear or the danger he actually faces. The story of teenagers going to war today is an important one, and it is not told often enough. Myers writes an important book to have in any collection to recognize that many teens will choose to join the military instead of, or before, going on to college. Robin is only eighteen, and it is difficult to watch his innocence erased as war leaves its mark on him, but it is the reality for many young men and women. This fine book could be included with a unit on current events and is a good choice for boys. Reviewer: Stephanie Petruso
April 2008 (Vol. 31, No. 1) --Voya

In 2003, in the early days of Operation Iraqi Freedom, young Robin Perry already wonders about "an enemy we can't identify and friends we're not sure about." Myers dedicates this novel to the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Services and to their families, and he offers a powerful study of the strange war they have been sent to fight, where confusion and randomness rule. Why are they fighting? Whom are they fighting? When will they be hit next? Narrated by Robin, nephew of Richie Perry, the main character of the landmark Fallen Angels (1988), this companion expertly evokes the beauty of Iraq and the ugliness of war. Given the paucity of works on this war, this is an important volume, covering much ground and offering much insight. Robin's eventual understanding that his experience was not about winning or losing the war but about "reaching for the highest idea of life" makes this a worthy successor to Myers's Coretta Scott King Award-winning classic. A Family Affair
By R. Lee Barrett
As the father of two boys whose gathering steam into pubescence is building momentum to the dawning of the day that they, of their individual volition will have the ability to join the armed forces, I feel my own anxiety mounting. Lying awake in bed at night, I can hear the passage of time as the carnage of war becomes less a digital celebration of modern entertainment ("Call of Duty" comes to mind), and slowly edges in to the dim light of life and death reality for my sons. I have lost friends to the war on terror. I have friends that are disfigured and disabled from a decade-long era of unending war. How do I guide my sons on such a vital matter in which I have precious little personal insight?

Sunrise Over Fallujah may be a good starting point for this conversation. Myers seemingly presents a topically accurate accounting of one young man's experience in the recent era of unending conflict in the Middle East. While not exhaustive in scope, Myers quickly gets to the heart of the narrative of the American soldier as an architect of peace and rebirth rather than a one-dimensional warmonger.

As good as Sunrise Over Fallujah is, it is remarkable both for what is included and what is excluded in the text. Myers necessarily includes combat, and its aftermath, in the narrative. Unlike the genre of first person shooters that most kids know and love, Sunrise Over Fallujah doesn't glorify the gore and mayhem that pervades military style shooters. But it also lacks a real examination of the emotional trauma of death and of killing. The narrative infers those consequences, but passes over them in only a shadow's substance. In so doing, Myers probably misses some opportunities to move beyond the nuance and introduce younger reader's to some hard realities. In the end, Myers produces a timely, and telling book that rightfully belongs on any YA "must read" list.

Flip side of the headlines.
By Gingerbread Man
If you've been paying attention to the news for the last several years, you'll recall that we're at war. Read here to learn what the young men and women (and not always so young) see and think about the goings-on in Iraq. These are US Army soldiers (a few Marines) who give their impressions of war and life in the military. Surprisingly, it's not positive and it's not negative. It's reality as they perceive it. Not even as their officers and non-coms wish them to perceive it; not even as their command structure or parents would like them to.

The group of new soldiers, hardly-acquainted, inexperienced in combat, arrives in Kuwait and soon are ordered to the attack on the Hussein regime in Iraq. They step up to what they were trained to do. They are reluctant, afraid, conflicted and excited. They often surprise themselves, but they don't disappoint their leaders or their country. Be advised though: they have doubts, they have issues. These are your kids, or kids you taught in school, or sat beside in school, or ate burgers and birthday cake with. They have all that baggage and they bring it with them to Iraq. It's their filter as they fight and kill and try to do their best. It's kind of sad to watch them go through it, but they do and they pretty much succeed.

Walter Dean Myers is a good writer. This is the first book by him for me, but it was an easy read. I liked that it was both honest and sincere.

The Price of War for Teenaged Soldiers
By Sandy Carlson
Robin "Birdy" Perry feels compelled to leave Harlem, forego college, and join the Army in the aftermath of 9/11. He does just that--without his father's support. In Sunrise over Fallujah, the 2008 young adult novel by acclaim writer Walter Dean Myers, Birdy finds himself in Iraq and attached to a Civil Affairs unit, a group of soldiers assigned the dubious honor of testing the waters in various "hearts and mind" situations with local Iraqis conceived by higher ups who say they are intent on establishing peace and building democracy. Birdy soon learns the people he can trust are the men and women soldiering right alongside them. Beyond this small group, nothing's for sure.

Because soliders who participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom had not only to defeat an enemy but also to build relationships with locals whose loyalties might by lie with the old regime or with some other religious faction or with some other tribe, knowing where to point the gun and when to soot becomes a nightmarish challenge. The Rules of Engagement change from day to day. Nothing is clear. Nobody can be trusted. Everyone has an agenda. And some lies are very convincing.

Myers's novel takes the reader on a journey through the desert, the streets of Baghdad, and other parts of Iraq that are as mysterious as they are ancient and sometimes incomprehensible to the young man from Harlem and his friends--a tough gunner who bounced around in foster care, a wannabe blues musician, a dad--in uniform. Moving forward from day to day with limited information to do job after job on which depends the future of a war-ravaged country about as unlike the US as a country could be turns Birdy and his friends into adults who understand the power and eloquence of silence to speak for the soul from that place deep down where words have no place.

As I turned the pages of this novel about teenagers at war, I found myself muttering, "No way, no way, no way...." because I liked the kids in this story. I could see the students in my classroom becoming these soldiers--and hopefully knowing before it's too late that life is about the person alongside you and the only moment you have is right now.

About the Author
Rebecca is an English illustrator living in Australia. She grew up in a creative, if slightly eccentric, family. Her days were spent roaming the English countryside collecting wild flowers and leaves, chasing butterflies and birds, and drawing tiny pictures of everything she could. After graduating from art school in Winchester, she moved to London where she worked as a textile designer. She worked there for a few years, until her restlessness had her flying off to Australia in search of adventure. Now she has replaced the countryside with concrete, and lives slap-bang in the middle of a big city. But she is to be found most days in her studio, drinking endless cups of tea, staring out of the window at a bunch of imaginary critters, and trying to draw them.

I am really enjoying coloring. I wish the front of the envelope wasn't quite so busy. If I mail these cards the addresses will have to be crammed into the space provided which is not very big and the return address will have to be put on the back unless you cover some of the coloring. The book is really nice. I didn't like having to wait so long to get it - but it's certainly worth it.

The Invention of Childhood, by Hugh Cunningham

The Invention of Childhood will paint a vivid picture of the lives of children in Britain from pagan Anglo-Saxon times to the present day. Drawing heavily on primary sources, such as diaries, autobiographies, paintings, photographs and letters, the book will present a complete chronological history of the experience of children in Britain during the past 1500 years. We will learn the key elements that have shaped their lives down the ages and how this has differed as a result of gender, geography and ethnicity. The book will also relate children's lives to larger events in national and international history. Written by Hugh Cunningham the Professor of History at the Universtity of Kent at Canterbury, and an expert on childhood history - the book will accompany the Radio 4 series presented by the highly respected children's author Michael Morpurgo. Michael is contributing a lengthy foreword to the book. 'The Invention of Childhood' will expand on a number of key themes from the radio series, including the idea of childhood as a distinct stage of life. Opinions on when childhood should start and end, and how it differs from adulthood have changed considerably down the centuries. And these inventions and reinventions of childhood (hence the title) have had a profound effect on children's lives. The prolonged childhood we enjoy in Britain today was a luxury few could afford in the past. This fascinating study will draw attention to the ways in which we may find childhood and children in the past quite similar to the present and to ways in which childrens lives from the past seem to differ sharply from the lives children lead today.

Very informative and interesting
By Becca
I faithfully listened to "The Invention of Childhood" which was (and is currently being) broadcast on BBC Radio 4. This is such an interesting topic and the the narrator, Michael Morpurgo, really captivates the listener. I actually came to the Amazon website to see if there was a compilation in book or audio format where I could have it all in one shot.
So many people in our world today think that life as we know it now was always like this. This history of childhood tells us that many things we take for granted today (child support, orphanages, elimination of child labour, education for girls) are things that were nonexistent a century before.
If you are at all interested in history, you must listen to this series.

great complementary volume to a great series
By fanofhistory
I thoroughly enjoyed both the radio series and the book. The book was well-written, engaging and sufficiently intellectual without appearing too snobby or the author being too fascinated with the sound of his own 'voice'. This is history telling at its best. High recommended.

[Read by Dave Mallow]

At long last, the epic biography Ted Williams deserves -- and that his fans have been waiting for. -- The Kid is biography of the highest literary order, a thrilling and honest account of a legend in all his glory and human complexity. In his final at-bat, Williams hit a home run. Bradlee's marvelous book clears the fences, too.

Williams was the best hitter in baseball history. His batting average of .406 in 1941 has not been topped since, and no player who has hit more than five hundred home runs has a higher career batting average. Those totals would have been even higher if Williams had not left baseball for nearly five years in the prime of his career to serve as a Marine pilot in World War II and Korea. He hit home runs farther than any player before him -- and traveled a long way himself, as Ben Bradlee Jr.'s grand biography reveals. Born in 1918 in San Diego, Ted would spend most of his life disguising his Mexican heritage. During his twenty-two years with the Boston Red Sox, Williams electrified crowds across America -- and shocked them, too. His notorious clashes with the press and fans threatened his reputation. Yet while he was a god in the batter's box, he was profoundly human once he stepped away from the plate. His ferocity came to define his troubled domestic life. While baseball might have been straightforward for Ted Williams, life was not.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, December 2013: In an age of performance enhancing drugs and a culture of wealth and deceit in professional sports, it's refreshing to revisit the feats of one of baseball’s best: the last man to hit .400 in a season, with a lifetime .344 batting average, who played remarkable baseball until age 40 and who reigns as the best all-around hitter in history. What sets this exhaustive exploration apart from other Ted Williams biographies is the author's finesse at maintaining a fan's enthusiasm for his remarkable subject while confronting the warts-and-all reality of an imperfect hero. Boston Globe reporter-editor Ben Bradlee Jr. admits at the start that Williams was, indeed, "my hero." Still, Bradlee never shies from dark side of the Williams myth: the insecure immigrant's son; the imperfect father and husband; the raging hothead, who flaunted his disdain for the press and a few teammates. Bradlee spent a decade investigating every detail of Williams’s 83 years--and beyond. He even uncovers gruesome tidbits about the strange aftermath of Williams’s death in 2002, when his body was taken to a cryonics facility, his head severed and then frozen inside a Tuperware-like container. Passionately researched and artfully told, this is much more than a sports story; it's the sprawling saga of a talented, tenacious, tumultuous, one-of-a-kind American man. --Neal Thompson

Review
"Sumptuous..The Kid reads like an epic....Bradlee has given us the fullest exploration yet of his monumental ego and the best explanation for his vast inferiority complex."―Allen Barra, Boston Globe

"What distinguishes Bradlee's The Kid from the rest of Williams lit is, its size and the depth of its reporting....Bradlee's expansiveness enables his book to transcend the familiar limits of the sports bio and to become instead a hard-to-put-down account of a fascinating American life."―Charles McGrath, New York Times Book Review

"Superb....Ted Williams hated what he considered invasions of his privacy, but perfectionist that he was, he would probably have to concede that the work ethic that underpins The Kid is exemplary....When I began reading this book, I thought that only baseball fans would find it interesting. But after finishing The Kid, I suspect that even those indifferent to the sport might find its human drama absorbing."―Howard Schneider, Wall Street Journal

"The prose is breezy, the research and reporting are impeccable....This book very much sets out to be the definitive document of a great, complicated, fascinating person and ultimately, it succeeds."―Dave Bry, Slate

"Bradlee's brilliant account is required reading for any Red Sox fan. It's also a fascinating portrait of a complex character that a baseball agnostic or even a Yankees fan will find hard to put down."―Jerry Harkavy, Associated Press

Ben Bradlee Jr. hits a grand slam across the Green Monster of Fenway Park in this definitive life of the Kid Ted Williams!
By C. M Mills
If you read one sports biography each year then this is the selection for you! What a massive book about (arguably) baseball's all time greatest hitter. The life of Ted Williams (1918-2002) comes to colorful life in this very long biography. (In my opinion the book could have been more judiciously edited). Ben Bradlee Jr. a longtime Boston based journalist has provided a detailed look at the man called by many nicknames:" Teddy Baseball, the Splendid Splinter and most famously The Kid.
Ted Williams was born in San Diego into a family of low middle class struggle. His mother was Mexican which Williams kept long hidden. Williams reached out to men like Pumpsie Green the first African-American to play for the Red Sox in 1959. The Red Sox under their owner Tom Yawkey were the last major league team to integrate their squad. Ted also called for the induction of players such as Satchel Paige and Monte Irwin and other stars from the Negro Leagues. This stand was most clearly stated when Teddy Baseball was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
Ted Williams played for the minor league San Diego Padres and the Minneapolis Milles before breaking into the majors with the Boston Rex Sox in 1939. Williams was a great hitter posting a .344 lifetime batting average. Williams was the last man to hilt 400 in
1941, Williams lost the MVP crown to his arch rival Joe DiMaggio who hit in 56 straight games as he led the Yankees to the pennant. Williams played in one World Series in 1946 when the Bosox fell to the St. Louis Cardinals. Ted was famous for his winning home run in the 1949 All Star Game. Teddy Ballgame won six hitting crowns and twice was named AL MVP.
Williams statistics would have been even more astounding if he had not bravely served as a Marine Corp Aviator in both World War II and Korea. In Korea he flew thirty-nine combat missions and became a friend of John Glenn the future astronaut and United States Senator from Ohio.
Ted Williams was a complex and volatile man with a hair trigger temper. Williams gave of his time and money visiting dying children, supporting the Jimmy Fund to aid cancer patients and helping his friends and family when they had financial problems. Ted was loyal and a generally friendly man whose temper could explode. He was profane and hated reporters. Williams may have been bipolar and today would have been treated for mental health issues.
Ted had a stormy private life. He was married three times and all unions ended in divorce. He had a difficult relationships with his three children Bobby Jo by first wife Doris'; John Henry and Claudia by his third wife Dolores. John Henry was a bit of a rogue. He had Ted preserved on ice and his head removed from his body to be preserved by ALCOR a cryonotics company. John Henry forced his aging and ill dad into the lucrative memorabilia market.
Ted Williams comes across as a baseball version of John Wayne or a character in an Ernest Hemingway short story. Williams was a perfectionist in all his major loves including:": hitting a baseball;' fishing with professional level skill'; hunting'; photography and serial womanizing. Ted professed to be an agnostic but late in life professed believe in Christ as Lord. Ted was a brilliant man who mastered the many challenges in his life.
Ben Bradlee is to be commended for his decade of research and his fluid prose which makes the Kid of baseball and his times come alive in countless anecdotes. Ted Williams, warts and all, was a great American icon and a patriot. God bless his troubled soul. A great book highly recommended. It kept me enthralled for the week I took to carve time out of my schedule to read it.

A detailed bio of the Splendid Splinter
By Steven Peterson
Ted Williams was a tortured person, as this lengthy biography makes clear. But, oh my, what a hitter he was! The last player to hit .400. With a major league career that began in 1939, in 1957--at an advanced age for a player--he hit .388. If he had any legs left, he may well have hit .400 if he would have been able to get some "leg hits."

The book accomplishes several worthy goals. First, it provides a big picture description and analysis of his baseball career--from the time when he first started playing until his retirement. It shows a growth as a player--from indifferent to playing defense to becoming a pretty decent outfielder. The book depicts his approach to hitting very nicely. It also shows the volatile side of him, when he would lose his temper, publicly get into painful disputes with reporters, sometimes not hustling when he would become angry with someone, and so on. And the ways he would "psyche" himself for a game. For instance, taking swings in the locker room, he would say: "I'm Teddy [expletive deleted] Ballgame of the Major [expletive deleted] Leagues. How can this pitcher get me out with his [expletive deleted] pitching" (I could not retrieve the exact quotation, but this is close]. The book has his batting statistics at the end (page 785), and that is helpful, to get a sense of the trajectory of his career.

Second, it gives a glimpse of Williams as a person. Not always pretty. He was married a number of times and the end result was often unpleasant. He had numerous affairs, had a wicked temper. In short, he tended to treat his wives badly. While his children would say that he was a good father, he was often away. And his personality. . . . He was obviously someone with some emotional/mental problems. He would sometimes get discouraged easily; he would lash out at people; and so on.

Third, it portrays his distressing state near the end of his life. Health problems came up. His son was manipulative and tried to develop a career and lots of income, and he was not above misusing his father. Perhaps most distressing, he wanted to "freeze" his father after death, rather than allowing Williams to be cremated as he had requested. The story is that Williams finally agreed, but the book certainly makes it appear that his son and a daughter manipulated him into the decision.

A richly told tale of a larger than life figure, with larger than life problems, who was a larger than life baseball player.

A Decade of Research Finally Brought to Fruition
By Bill Emblom
Whew! It has taken me two weeks to pioneer my way through this detailed biography of Ted Williams authored by Ben Bradlee, Jr. but the effort was worth it. We now have had two five star biographies on Williams, the other by Lee Montville entitled "Ted Williams". Both are worth your time. If you want to know practically everything you care to know and more about Teddy Ballgame than Bradlee's book "The Kid" would be the book to read. Some may feel they are being told more than what would interest them because Bradlee goes into great detail about the several wives of Williams in addition to his children and step-children. In addition there is a detailed hassle regarding Ted being "stored" in the Alcor facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, that may be belaboring to some readers.

Ted Williams was a man of many mood swings which may have dated back to his childhood where his mother was a dedicated worker with the Salvation Army and pretty much ignored him as did his father as well. Williams could be profanely abusive to people including his many wives and others who crossed his path. He, no doubt, could be very difficult to live with. On the other hand he could be very gentle with youngsters and would go out of his way to be of assistance to others who were in need. It was the great Rogers Hornsby who gave Williams the advice to "get a good ball to hit." Red Sox clubhouse man Johnny Orlando tagged Williams with the nickname "The Kid.".

Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey was often beloved by his players. He did, however, run a house of prostitution in South Carolina in which he, himself, took advantage of. We have often heard of "The curse of the Bambino" in which the Bosox failed for so many years to win a championship due to their shipping Babe Ruth off to the Yankees in 1920. However, the real curse lies in the lap of owner Tom Yawkey who wanted nothing to do with having an African-American player on the team. The Sox turned down both Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays in a tryout. Can you imagine those two in addition to Williams in the Hub's lineup at the same time during the 1950s? Yawkey and bigoted manager Mike "Pinky" Higgins have only themselves to blame for Boston's lackluster teams during that golden decade of the '50s.

Author Bradlee gives ample coverage of Ted Williams' military career. Ted was a flight instructor in World War II and had more interest in flying than in playing wartime baseball in the army. He was disappointed to say the least in being recalled to fight in the Korean War as a fighter pilot. However, his military career was exemplary and exhibited well-disciplined behavior.

Williams' greatest thrill in baseball was his walk-off home run in the 1941 All-Star game. He batted a disappointing .200 in the 1946 World Series but he had suffered an injury to his elbow by a pitched ball prior to the start of the Fall Classic.

A biography on Ted Williams would not be complete without a detailed coverage of his fishing exploits with his favorite locations being the Florida Keys, the Islamorada in the Upper Keys, and the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, Canada.

Ted toyed with the idea of quitting in the mid-1950s until a fan named Ed Mifflin convinced him to continue playing so he could achieve milestones that were within his reach. The book covers anecdotes of several Red Sox players such as Don Buddin, Sammy White, Ted Lepcio, and Milt Bolling all of whom I remember from my baseball cards of the 1950s and my following of the Detroit Tigers.

This book is a massive effort by author Ben Bradlee, Jr. which took him a decade to bring to fruition. It also includes three separate sections of photographs. If you want to know most everything about Ted Williams' life then this would be the book to read. If you want another five star biography on Ted Williams which will provide you with less detail then I would suggest you read Lee Montville's book entitled Ted Williams. Both are outstanding.

An entertaining read, with unexpected wisdoms within.

A great read. This book details Shaun's rise to the top of the Miami nightlife scene, but its lessons are applicable to any field you may choose to pursue. Through his anecdotes as well as quotes from Napoleon, P.T. Barnum, and others Shaun details his craft while giving more broadly applicable teachings. I bought this book for an entertaining read, and It that, but I also found many wisdoms that I didn't expect to find within its pages. If you want an entertaining read buy this book, if you're needing a little motivation, or just want more in your professional endevors, buy this book. It is a very rewarding and entertaining read.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Wanda is convinced that there is a monster in her closet. Her parents try to prove that there is nothing to fear, and her big brother makes fun of her. However, Granny comes in, listens at the closet door, and says, "Yep,- I do believe there's one in there." Then she appeals to her granddaughter's compassionate side, explaining that the monster must be uncomfortable in the closet with only a rubber boot on which to rest its head. The tactic works. Wanda creates a friendship with the imaginary creature, and 17 days later, as per Granny's decree, the intruder departs, with good-bye gifts. When Ruthie bewails the monster in her closet, Wanda is left to take her cousin under her wing and explain how to handle the situation. This story is a delightful variation of the hiding-monster theme popularized by Mercer Mayer's There's Something in My Attic and There's a Nightmare in My Closet (both Puffin, 1992) and James Howe's There's a Monster under My Bed (Atheneum, 1986). Spinelli adds the charming element of Wanda guiding her young relative through the fearful mysteries of childhood after vanquishing her own fears. Hayashi's pleasant watercolors, reminiscent of Mayer's style, accompany the text of this enjoyable story that will enrich most collections.

From Booklist
K-Gr. 2. On the heels of the movie Monsters, Inc., this picture book offers another entertaining twist on the scary monster-in-the-closet theme. When Granny suggests that monsters hide because they are shy, young Wanda learns to see nighttime through the eyes of the fearful creature. She tries to make his closet experience a bit more comfortable, throwing a pillow into the closet and reading him a story before bed. When Granny says it is time for the monster to move on, Wanda sends him a scarf and a card to see him on his way. But then it's her turn to comfort her fearful cousin, Ruthie, who is screaming about the monster in her closet. Hayashi's watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations do a great job of melding the real and the imaginary in Spinelli's story, staying true to the child's fearful fantasies and transforming them with warmth and affection. Our kids loved this book and the show!
By J Muench
Our 3 & 5 year old really enjoyed reading this book. It is very humorous and engaging and the kids love to role-play the story. It was recently turned into a musical with songs and lyrics written by Laurie Berkner. The musical is having it's second run in NYC from 7/13/13 to 9/8/13 and you should definitely take the kids to see it! The book is OK, but I ordered it based on the "very good" condition listed. As such, it won't work for us because the first page of the story was missing the bottom half, and we wanted to read it to our class in our Montessori school. That's just no way to start the story.

Counseling and Psychotherapy Essentials: Integrating Theories, Skills, and Practices (Norton Professional Books (Hardcover)), by Bernard D

The essential textbook for learning integrative psychotherapy.

In an age when actual psychotherapeutic practice is predominantly eclectic, most psychotherapy textbooks are outdated and impractically bound in theoretical pigeon holes. Counseling and Psychotherapy Essentials incorporates into a single source the latest advances in the field and focuses on psychotherapy's core processes―rather than ideologies―to provide a comprehensive and imminently pragmatic textbook for learning integrative counseling and psychotherapy.

The central lessons of this book are framed on one side by a theoretical overview in which essential therapeutic concepts and techniques are synthesized, and on the other side by a detailed review of frequently encountered concerns such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, couple/marital issues, and psychopharmacology. From the general to the specific, Good and Beitman keep their discussion grounded in the core processes of psychotherapy―engagement, pattern search, change, and termination―that facilitate therapeutic change.

In Counseling and Psychotherapy Essentials, students have a textbook that seamlessly connects their classroom experience with their actual work with clients, preparing them to be effective clinicians.

Review
“[A] useful addition to course curriculum...provides a large amount of relevant information in an easy-to-read format.” (The Family Journal)

“[T]he authors bring distinctive and needed complementary perspectives and experiences . . . . The authors have distilled a tremendous amount of material and clinical literature germane to psychotherapy and counseling . . . . While avoiding jargon, they also manage to avoid facile reductionism.” (American Journal of Psychiatry)

Good information, poor execution.
By James Yanni
This book has a fair amount of very useful information in it, with only a bit too much reliance on jargon and buzzwords. It is probably a useful text for learning the basics of psychotherapy.

The problem is, it's poorly written. There are far too many typos of the sort found on page 15, "...(arising from a rejecting an (rather than AND) impoverished primary caregiver-child relationship)." Or on page 46, "...the provision of effective therapy is likely to increase as individual countries and the world becomes (rather than become) increasingly global and multicultural." Or page 49, "This section will briefly introduce, strategic, structural, and solution-focused theories..." (There should be no comma after "introduce".) Or in the table on page 62, "cathart" is not a word, so cannot be used as the verb form of "catharsis". Or page 73, "...highlighting the and general themes..." (Either the word "specific" has been left out, or the word "and" is superfluous.) Or on page 109, where the non-word "self-depreciating" is used rather than the word "self-deprecating", which is clearly what was intended. Or on page 162, "Our ability to choose a response creates and our freedom." (I'm not entirely sure what was intended here, which makes it one of the most egregious errors; it may be that the word "and" was simply superfluous, or it may be that a secondary verb in addition to "creates" was omitted, or it may be that a secondary direct object in addition to "our freedom" was omitted. There's just no telling.) Or, back to simple grammatical errors, on page 176, we have "Several tool..." rather than "tools". On page 182, we have "...several change strategies may applied..." rather than BE applied. And on page 185, "...consider asking the person you are attracted to do something with you..." rather than "attracted to, to do something...". And on page 210 (in table 9.4) we have "...relationships in the client's life maybe latent signs..." rather than "MAY BE". Spanning pages 222 and 223, we have "Sometimes social contact cannot be avoided. For example, a client successfully treated for chronic cannot be avoided. For example, a client successfully treated for chronic anxiety symptoms took a position in the hospital where the therapist worked." On page 231, we have "As clients are better able to relax deliberately, they are able to relax more selectively and more quickly in stressful and competitive." (The word "situations", presumably, was omitted.) On page 251 we have "...that result in their feeling a lack social support..." (The word "of" is omitted.) On page 291, in table 12.5, we have "Repeated sets of conscious lateral eye movements (like those sleep)." (The word "in" is omitted.) On page 292, we have "Approximately one-third to one-half of the population will or has experienced a panic attack..." (Rather than "will experience or has experienced".) On page 309, we have "One of the tenants of 12-step fellowships..." (A "tenant" is a person renting an apartment. A "tenet" is the word we're looking for here.) On page 336, we have "Their brains and bodies are vulnerable to stress so they are urgently need to develop and strengthen..." Not entirely sure what was intended here, but I think it was simply a case of the word "are" being superfluous.) On page 342, we again have a confusion of the words "tenant" and "tenet" ("Central tenants of narrative therapy...") On page 356, we have the words "will" and "that" transposed ("...dynamics will that create desired change...") On page 359, there's a missing space between the words "others" and "who" ("...may hold toward otherswho are not present...").

Some of these errors are more critical than others; any one or two of them might have been overlooked. But the sheer volume of sloppiness here wouldn't even be acceptable in a mass-market paperback; in a $50 textbook, it's just unforgivable.
