MUST-HAVE FOR GENEALOGY

Today genealogy research has become hugely important for individuals and families who want to trace their origins. Scottish immigration to the Americas played an enormous role in the histories of both the United States and Canada. Sooner or later, a descendant of Scots will probably want to explore how he or she is related into that central Scottish institution, the clan. The author of this two-volume work, Adrian Grant, made his own personal journey into the story of his clan, the Grants, some of whose immigrant sons moved Canadian and U.S. history ahead a notch. Then he went on to do a thorough study of all the clans. As someone who has done my own journeys on family genealogy, I found this work valuable for its thoroughness, since it covers everything from DNA studies to guidance on interpreting legends in ancient chronicles. I recommend it to anyone who is doing genealogy searches, or who simply wants to take a closer look at Scotland's rich history.

The Best of de Mello�s Story Collections

Of all the collections of meditation and wisdom stories that de Mello has put together I think that this one is the best (followed closely by Song of the Bird, which is equal in quality but has fewer stories). This book contains over 250 stories arranged by topic: Prayer, Awareness, Religion, Grace, The Saints, The Self, Love and Truth. These are real stories not just the didactic aphorisms and sayings (beginning with "The Master said") that are more typical of de Mello's One Minute Wisdom, One Minute Nonsense and More One Minute Nonsense. And the stories are more to some spiritual point, in my judgment, while the companion book, The Heart of the Enlightened, tends to have many that are merely humorous. So while he has a lot of good sayings and stories, were you to pick just one of those books, for my tastes it would be this one.

Books Can Speak

Following Anthony de Mello's book titled Awareness, I rank this as number two for him. The work being great for those living a life of reflection and contemplation. Before I ever practiced Zen Buddhism, and while I was not Christian either, Anthony de Mello's works were my spirituality. And my were those ever enjoyable and fascinating times. New worlds opened up to my sluggish eyes. De Mello gave me hope, made it appear, "Why yes. Life does have potential you silly ***." This book's in essence a compilation of short to moderately long sections borrowed from various religious traditions and/or philosophical traditions. Following some of these allegories de Mello may add a concise commentary on the piece, at other moments he leaves it up to the reader to truly decipher what had been said.
You are going to love Anthony de Mello. So treat yourself to a great book. Go ahead. Do it. Buy this book.

This book is the only passport you will need to travel to the heretofore not-very-well-if-ever-at-all understood Deaf-World. Well written, "Journey into the Deaf-World" is quite exhaustive in its coverage of the the life and times of Deaf people in America. From culture to education and everywhere in between, "Journey" is as much enlightening as it is enraging. You will find yourself newly aware of sad injustices and lack of understanding the confront the the Deaf community at every turn.

While not always an easy read, one must give credit to the authors for making what could have been a cumbersome text into a scholarly-yet-accessible book. Especially enjoyable are the examples of real-life situations that Deaf people encounter. For instance, when the sections on education are covered, "Journey" examines the different methods of attack used by various educational professionals over the years, effectively giving a well-rounded picture of the educational scene from the Deaf perspective. But when it gives a series of mock narratives of the typical experience of a Deaf child in each of these methods of teaching, the reader is able to experience what can only be described as true enlightenment.

Don't be intimidated by the book's thickness. If you have any tie to the Deaf-World,or even just a passing interest, "Journey" will take you for a fast-paced ride you'll not soon forget.

Enlightening Path Into New World of Deaf Culture

This book is just excellent to take one into another world, a world that is closed to most of us in hearing world, that of the Deaf.
It has made me sensitive to this other language group and its rich history and culture. The intro to sign to oral education and all its associated parameters and issues was most enlightening, taking one right up to current mainstreaming emphasis.
It is well written, organized, flows well and is just a delight to read. Certainly this is a major resource to understand this neglected and misunderstood group of fascinating humans. This book certainly will raise one's consciousness and passion for this in many cases neglected area of our society.
