From School Library Journal
Grade 4–7—This adaptation provides a look at the origins of the cat Scourge, the evil leader of the Bloodclan. Tiny is a fearful house kitten who is the runt of the litter. Once he strikes out on his own, though, he renames himself Scourge and vows to take revenge on the wild forest cats who once attacked him. Though drawn and laid out in a manga style, the illustrations are more detailed than typical manga drawings and effectively bring out the cats' personalities and characters. This is not a cuddly animal tale: there are some vicious attacks, one ending in a death.—Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

Scourge is my favorite villain from Warriors
By P.W.
Scourge is my favorite villain from Warriors. To know more about is past life is great. I absolutely loved The Rise of Scourge. The drawings are correct and even if the 'manga' is small, we learn a lot about Scourge/Tiny. Scourge is not just an heartless cat who enjoys killing : He's a great leader who protects his clanmate. He wasn't lucky to have friends to help him or faith for StarClan to guide him, like Firestar. He became the best he could all alone. I love him even more now that I know how hard his life was. Thank you Erin Hunter.

Amazing Chronology
By Reedfrost
This is a great chronology of the life of Scourge, or, more accurately, his rise to power. It details how exactly he did it, as well as focusing upon his rough early life. The art is very good, and I enjoyed watching him become the cat that was feared by all. As with all Warriors manga books, it was a little short, but I believe that the art and enjoyable story line well make up for it.

Colonial and Postcolonial Literature, by Elleke Boehmer

Colonial and Postcolonial Literature is the leading critical overview of and historical introduction to colonial and postcolonial literary studies. Highly praised from the time of its first publication for its lucidity, breadth, and insight, the book has itself played a crucial part in founding and shaping this rapidly expanding field. The author, an internationally renowned postcolonial critic, provides a broad contextualizing narrative about the evolution of colonial and postcolonial writing in English. Illuminating close readings of texts by a wide variety of writers--from Kipling and Conrad through to Kincaid, from Ngugi to Noonuccal and Naipaul--explicate key theoretical terms such as "subaltern," "colonial resistance," "writing back," and "hybridity." This revised edition includes new critiques of postcolonial women's writing, an expanded and fully annotated bibliography, and a new chapter and conclusion on postcolonialism exploring keynote debates in the field relating to sexuality, transnationalism, and local resistance.

"A sustained, intelligent and refreshingly sceptical discussion about what constitutes the focus of postcolonial literary studies.... This is an excellent introduction."--Times Higher Education Supplement

"Boehmer presents a comprehensive, lucid, and nuanced account of both the literature of the British empire and the literature in opposition to empire....Colonial and Postcolonial Literature is as accessible to the newcomer to the field as it is useful to the specialist."--World Literature Today

Snapshot indeed
By Wildeguy
While I agree with the reviewer who commented that this book is an excellent snapshot of the field, I would add that students whose interests are piqued by this book should move quickly to primary readings. Unfortunately the 1995 edition of this book is riddled with typos and is poorly written for citation or bibliographic information. P. 22 has a sentence about Edwin Arnold: "While promoting Empire in his leaders for the Daily Telegraph..." The student might think "letters"? "lead-ins"? What is being said? The sentences are also poorly written and often prone to mislead undergraduates. A few students citing this book produced questionable work which had to be understood in terms of what this source was actually leading them to believe. Also page 21 introduces "the colonial other" referencing Hegel and Sartre without following up with examples from their work where these are discussed. Numerous examples of this kind are found in the text. Nevertheless, it is still an excellent introductory work and should help students by whetting their appetites for more.

Excellent introduction to postcolonial studies
By Durba Basu
Elleke Boehmer's "Colonial And Postcolonial Literature" is an excellent introduction to postcolonial literature/studies/theory. Her exposition of literary and theoretical landmarks in the field should be helpful for all who wish to first look at a snapshot of the field and then proceed to reading in depth. Much has happened since the book first appeared (and there is a second edition which I have not checked) but it still is a very good first introductory volume, as Boehmer writes with remarkable clarity.

Communicating Effectively
By Marc Beshara
We use this book at the Florida State University to teach a Freshman/Sophmore level Public Speaking class. It's a great book because it's simple and straight-forward. It approaches the student with real-world examples and presents solutions for the individual to overcome fears/roadblocks to public speaking.
I recommend this book as a textbook for any student of public speaking. It's also written so it can be read cover to cover so it can be used out of the classroom!

Great communication help
By EJ
Good communication is very important, and this book is one of the best books I have in my library on this subject. I also got the companion book, Bridges Not Walls 6th edition and together there is a wealth of valuable information and usable tools for good communication.

Poorly Written
By Angela S. Vonschmittou
For a book about communications, this book is poorly written. The subjects discussed are too complicated to be adequately explained by the over-simplistic writing style. Written very conversationally, much of the book seems more like rambling rather than proper elaboration on the communication process. Though I usually like seeing diagrams that accompany wordy explanations, the diagrams in the book are poorly constructed and more confusing than the worded message.

On the plus side, the book is a quick read.

Just Okay
By Cynthia Hilston
This book was hard to get through. It seemed to drag in places and was hard to follow until a big explanation was given by the Doctor at the end. I didn't care for the disgusting forms of the aliens. The ending somewhat redeemed it.

A must read
By Austin Schluter
The books that tug at the heart are the ones people remember. Wolverine fans know about his dark past but in this book logan is finally broken. Unredeemable. I love how the comic explores what would happen if hope was all but gone in the world. The heroes of the past become anti heroes or certainly come close if not crossing the line into being a villain. The artwork is beautiful and the story is amazing--read it.

A great read.
By Peter J. McGill
I bought this on a whim. I was an avid collector in my younger days in the late 60's, early 1970's. Then Marvel expanded beyond belief and, to my mind, the quality suffered. It come to a question of where my hard-earned pocket money should go. Sadly, comics lost out and life went on. Well, 40 years later, I have maybe 40 comics from the Silver Age and with the amazing movies, I'm in a position to revisit the universe of my childhood. Sad, huh?

This collection takes place in the dystopian future. Wolverine and a self aware Hawkeye travel across the United States confronting a world where the villains of Marvel have organised and have virtually wiped out our Marvel Superheroes. The storytelling is sharp and the art is fantastic. I was riveted from the first page. Yes, it's violent. Much more than I expected, but that's just how life is, sometimes. It's poignant and as Wolverine's story unfolds, very sad. It's a brilliant tale. Highly recommended.

Spectacular
By N. Durham
The last time that Mark Millar (Wanted, Ultimates, Civil War) took the reigns on Wolverine, he crafted Enemy of the State, a year-long arc that was by and far the best Wolverine story to come along in years. Now, he returns with Old Man Logan, which finds a future world that has been rendered desolate and devoid of hope thanks to the destruction of the superheroes from decades before. Former X-Man Wolverine, who no longer goes by that moniker and lives a simple farm life with his family, vowed never to pop his claws again, and is submitted to frequent beatings by the landowning Hulk Gang family. Broke and seeking to save his family, Logan becomes wingman to his former ally Hawkeye (now blind and driving Spider-Man's old car) as they go on a cross country trek to deliver a package, and naturally, end up getting into more than they bargained for. As Old Man Logan goes on and Millar gives us glimpses into this post-apocalyptic Marvel universe, one can't help but wonder whether or not they've seen all this before. True, Old Man Logan doesn't feature any story elements that haven't been seen in say, Peter David's Last Avengers Story or Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, but Millar manages to keep you enthralled regardless, and by the time the big reveal comes and we learn just why Logan vowed to never pop his claws again, you will be floored. And despite the fact that its conclusion is somewhat predictable, one cannot deny that Old Man Logan ends up being a surprisingly powerful superhero endeavor. Millar's Civil War partner Steve McNiven is on board as well, and his artwork is as effective and gorgeous as ever. All in all, whether you're a die hard Wolverine fan or not, Old Man Logan is simply not to be missed.

Review
"Simply speaking, this is my pick for the best book of 2012. A fantastic look into the inner workings of one of comic book's most compelling, dynamic characters; a masterfully written analysis/love note to the Dark Knight." - Stephen Harvey, FindYourGeek.com

"Langley cleverly combines his two loves, as evinced by the title, to create a work that will draw the most disinterested psychology students in by using the seemingly universally loved Byronic hero of Batman." - Geekscape.net

"Dr. Langley puts this masked vigilante and his admirers on the analyst couch to examine what makes him--and us--tick. A revealing look at Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego." - Barnes & Noble

"If you love Batman you will love this book. If you love psychology you will love this book! Do not worry about getting lost though, as Langley does an excellent job explaining everything he discusses... A book you shouldn't pass up, as once you start reading it you simply will not be able to put it down!" - International House of Geek

"...more entertaining than many of the others which populate the ever-growing field of texts about pop culture and the sciences. Rather than just telling us what we should know or think about Batman, the book supplements our own interest in the hero, and provokes us to think more about what's going on in his head." - StarPulse.com

From the Author
"I'll never get to meet the late Bob Kane or Bill Finger. We can't chat about their creations. I can't watch them greet fans, hear them recount anecdotes from their amazing lives, or thank them for everything they set in motion and all that their legacy has meant - not face-to-face anyway. This book is more than my answer to a question Adam West, the man who played my childhood hero, once asked me. It's my heartfelt 'thank you' to Bob and Bill. Jerry too." - Travis Langley, author of Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight, from his acknowledgments.

"...scholarly and insightful... His professional credentials, mixed with his love for the comic books and the character of Batman, create a fascinating, entertaining, and educational read." - Bat-Films executive producer Michael Uslan (Batman, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises), from his foreword to Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight.

"It is a terrific book. It explores the psychological implications of Batman's various incarnation, in print and on screens both large and small, and in the process gives us a pretty thorough biography of Batman, his friends, and his enemies... It serves as a witty and absolutely clear introduction to psychology, especially clinical psychology." - comic book writer and editor Dennis O'Neil (Batman, Detective Comics), from his introduction to Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight.

From the Back Cover

Does the Dark Knight have bats in his belfry?

Why does Batman really wear a costume to fight crime?

Why are his most intimate relationships with "bad girls" he ought to lock up?

And why won't he kill that homicidal clown?

Batman is one of the most compelling and enduring characters to come from the Golden Age of Comics, and interest in his story has only increased through countless incarnations since his first appearance in 1939's Detective Comics #27. Why does this superhero without superpowers fascinate us so much? Batman and Psychology examines the complex inner world of Batman and Bruce Wayne and the life and characters of Gotham City. What would Freud, Jung, and other professionals say about how childhood trauma spawned his life's mission? Is Batman neurotic? Psychotic? Does he have PTSD, OCD, or any other mental illness? Why the mask, the bat, and the underage partner, Robin? What psychopathologies lurk in the minds of supervillains like the Joker, the Riddler, Two-Face, and Catwoman? Are they really rogues and villains, or simply misunderstood victims of a heartless society? Do Batman and his foes depend on each other?

Combining psychological theory with the latest in psychological research, Batman and Psychology takes you on an unprecedented journey behind the mask and into the dark mind of your favorite Caped Crusader and his never-ending war on crime.

Great Book for What It Does
By james villanueva
I have read a lot of criticism of this book in online reviews. Most of them complain that this is not what the reader expected or the psychology was a basic intro level. To that I have one response:

If it never occurred to you to actually research the book before you bought it, then this is the wrong type of book for you.

As for the book itself, it is more than a mere "intro to psychology" . The author does evaluate Batman, to an extent. He explains the emotional and psychological differences of Batman at different point of his existence, from his very beginning as a mere comic book detective to his campy turn at a 1960's TV icon through the torrential movies of the 1990s, his various cartoon incarnations and arriving at the Christopher Nolan films.

Along the way we get small psychological briefs on various members of Batman's rouges gallery and even discuss how different love interests have influenced his emotional state.

It was a fascinating read for me and should only be considered by those looking for something along the lines of a psychological biography and not a "hero beats up the villain" story.

This Book is ...AMAZING
By RaymondGW
When I first picked this up I thought that it would just be an interesting way to pass a day or two. I've had a few college courses in psychology and thought it'd be neat to read about mental disorders in Batman's universe. This book is so much more than that. This could literally be the foundation of the most interesting college class EVER. Langley does a fantastic job of detailing various mental disorders and motivations not just in the Batman universe but also in the real world. The real pleasure in reading this book is that it's not just comic books and pop psychology but a primer for understanding real mental issues, and why some people are the way they are. It also explains why Batman only works inside of the universe he's in. The book is excellent.

An exceptional observation with modern psychology into Batman.
By Tyler
The book covers Batman. This includes all the way from the original 1939 comic to Adam West in the sixties to the The
Dark Knight Rises in 2012. If you are not familiar with academic psychology like Freud, Erikson, etc. then be prepared to learn. The book goes in depth into Batman's origins, his reasons for fighting criminals, and his many of most popular enemies using modern psychology methonds. The majority of the book is excellent and a very good read for even the Bat fans who have only seen the recent movies. The downsides are when the book gets heavy into the psychology referring different theories for the many psych gurus. Overall a read well worth the money even if there are some pretty heavy points.
