About the Author
Vigor Yang is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He received a Ph.D. in jet propulsion from the California Institute of Technology in 1984. Professor Yang has authored many publications on combustion, propulsion, and fluid mechanics.

Thomas B. Brill is Professor of Chemistry and Chemcial Engineering at the University of Delaware. He has published extensively in the fields of fast pyrolysis, energetic materials, hydrothermal chemistry, and spectroscopy. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1970.

Wu-Zhen Ren is the president of the academic committee of propellants and explosives of the China Ordnance Industry Ministry. Previously, he served at the China Patents Bureau. He graduated from the Beijing Institute of Technology in 1958. Mr. Ren holds many patents in solid propellants and explosives.

A dictionary that needs a lot more definitions... go figure

I got this dictionary for the PE Construction test; I used it a few times to look up definitions while I was studying and I could not find any of the words (about 7-10) . Considering this is a construction dictionary, I expected it to be more thorough. Nonetheless, I decided to take it to the test and I got an answer correct on the test thanks to it..
All in all, this dictionary is lacking and needs work from the authors and publisher. Considering the price point, it may be a decent back up reference; but beware that you may not find what your are looking for when you really need it..

I'm a CIvil/Structural engineer and this book lacks a lot of terms that I look for in it.

[Edit] It doesn't include "Rough Opening" and the definition of "Soffit" is not what is commonly accepted in the USA. It does include british definitions such as "rubbish" and "Royal Institute of British Architects.

All in all, if you're not in the UK, this book is "rubbish".

This dictionary definitely helped me out when I could not remember or had never heard of a term on the PE Civil exam. Highly recommend taking it into the exam. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Hatchet

Hatchet is a riveting book. It combines drama, comedy, and suspence all in one action pacted book. It's about a boy who ends up alone in a Canadian forest after a plane crash, and all the adventures he has. He has to learn a lot about surviving in the wilderness, including how to find food, shelter, and how to live with wild animals. He learns a lot about himself and how much heart it takes to be without everything you would normally live with. I enjoyed this book very much. Sometimes i found myself falling asleep with the book over my face because I did not want to go to sleep so i wouldn't miss an exciting event that was just around the corner. I'm going to keep reading Gary Paulsen. He is an excelent writer.

Thrilling survival story in the Canadian wilds.

Brian has seen his mother kissing another man. Shortly there after his parents divorce. While flying to an oil field in the Canadian wilds to visit his father Brian's pilot has a heart attack and dies. Brian manages to crash land the plane though he injures himself swims safely to shore . All he has is a small hatchet which was the last thing his mother give him before he got on the plane. His 54 days alone are well chronicled. His story, told in the 1st person is calmly intense. The whole story is tautly written . I felt I was able to feel Brian's emotion and was witness to his terrible spiritual death and eventual rebirth. The suspense , thrills and danger of wilderness survival are exploited to the fullest in this excellent book..

The Hatchet

The hatchet is about a boy named Brian. Brian is going through an emotional trauma. His parents just broke up, and now his dad lives in northern Canada. He is going to visit him when the pilot of the two-seater plane he is traveling in has a heart attack. Brian flies the plane for a while until it runs out of fuel. He lands it on a lake. He climbs out and swims to shore. He lies there for a few days, but decides to build a shelter when he gets fed up with the mosquitoes. Lots of animals get in including a skunk, a porcupine, and a bear. He makes it stronger, only to have it ripped down by a tornado. He makes up his mind to get a supply box from the plane. He builds a raft, swims out there and then almost passes out underwater when he sees that the pilot's skin and eyes have been food for the fish. He brings the box back to shore and gets rescued after leaving the emergency transmitter on. It's a really good book and you should read it.

Renowned worldwide for research and teaching experience related to nonmedical use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs, Charles Yesalis, ScD, MPH, is currently professor of Health Policy and Administration and Exercise and Sport Science at The Pennsylvania State University.

In addition to testifying before the U.S. Congress, he has acted as consultant for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Drug Enforcement Administration, NFL Players Association, Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Olympic Committee, National College Athletic Association, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Dr. Yesalis earned a master's degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan and a doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.

A comprehensive study of steroid history and research.

This is an academic book ,which will appeal to the serious researcher ,in the subject of anabolic steroids. Dr. Charles Yesalis offers the research findings and opinions of steroid advocates and detractors in an unbiased scientific document.
The book includes chapters on drug testing,analysis of performance,health implications and the legal aspects of steroid
possession and distribution ,as well as a comprehensive history of steroids.
The author reveals the controversy of the subject, by introducing the aspect of law enforcement of these controlled drugs, whilst quoting the American Medical Associations view that steroids should not be scheduled and that "...steroids can be used safely."
The author shows that several decades of steroid research ,by the medical authorities, often reveals a lack of understanding of steroid dosing ,as applied effectively, by top competing athletes.
This is a book to be recommended to the sports coach,researcher and above all, to the medical and health educating specialists whose inadequate understanding of anabolic steroids is often fostered by myth and anecdote.

And who is this author? Yesalis? A "professor of health policy, administration, exercise and sports science at Penn State"? And he has put together what? An "objective, in-depth collection of articles that examine anabolic-androgenic steroids, their effects, and long-term medical prognosis of use". Whoopee. Sorry, but men looking for Steroid information aren't looking for this type of "data". Men looking for real informaton, information that they can use on Steroids or AAS are going to be wasting their money with this book. If you feel you must read it then hope you find it in a library and not waste your money. If you want information that you can use and from a Bro that you can trust, then check out Anthony Roberts book called Anabolic Steroids: Ultimate Research Guide. And it does mean ULTIMATE. And it is something that you can use and trust being from someone who has Been There and Done That.

This book focuses attention primarily on the physical aspects of the binding and its construction principles. It is an expanded version of a series of lectures delivered by the author while Visiting Professor at the University of Amsterdam in 1987, supplemented with the results of ten years of intensive research in major libraries on the Continent, the United Kingdom and the USA. It surveys the evolution of binding structures from the introduction of the codex two thousand years ago to the close of the Middle Ages. Part I reviews the scanty physical evidence from the Mediterranean heritage, the early Coptic, Islamic and Ethiopian binding structures and their interrelation with those of the Byzantine realm. Part II is devoted to a detailed analysis of Western binding techniques, distinguishing the carolingian, romanesque and gothic wooden-board bindings as the main typological entities; their structure and function is compared with those of contemporary limp bindings. The book is illustrated with over 200 drawings and photographs and contains a comprehensive bibliography.

a scholarly classic

I am a journeyman bookbinder and still have much to learn about the craft. This book provides a wealth of information for those who wish to restore or recreate bindings from the medieval period. The text is a scholarly treatment of the subject and so is rather ponderous at times, but well worth working through. I am glad to own this book!

Early book structures analysed, described and illustrated

Histories of bookbinding almost all concentrate on the outward appearance and decoration, and ignore the construction of the book.

This is a great exception.

It is a very well written history of the early book from the very earliest codex forms, extremely well illustrated through photographs and beautifully readable structural diagrams.

Not a detailed manual for the beginner, but full of concepts and challenges for those with intermediate skills in book construction, and extended time to read it in digestible chunks.

EXTRAORDINARY!

A scholarly study of medieval bookbindings filled with new information as well as references to previous studies on the subject both successful and unsuccessful in the light of modern research. The truly magnificent aspect of the book, however, is it's illustrations. Close up photos and detailed drawings of bindings, sewings, endbands, etc make this book a must-have for binders interested in recreating historically accurate books of this time period as well as for those fascinated by the subject in and of itself.
