Sixty crisp, skillfully composed photographs follow children from all corners of the globe through a day, revealing activities that are strikingly similar yet widely divergent in the details. The juxtaposition of images is often remarkable. A photo of a girl waving from the back window of a Pennsylvania school bus appears beside a picture of a child in China's Yunnan Province, whose commute entails crossing a river in a seat suspended from a zip line. Many of the photographers (the images come from numerous sources) use light to dramatic effect: a soft glow illuminates the faces of eight girls in Gujarat, India; sunlight streams through windows as four boys stand at prayer in an Indo-nesian mosque. Supplementing Kerley's (A Cool Drink of Water) minimal, pithy text (Recess rocks! And so does lunch) are substantive concluding notes that specify the locations, provide cultural context for the photos and—most intriguing—offer occasional photographers' perspectives: the photo of the Indian girls was taken in a refugee camp (They were wonderful and full of laughter despite the terrible conditions). This is a stunning book of photographs showing how children around the world spend their day!

All around the world children begin to rise after the sun comes up. They get up out of their beds, wash themselves "and celebrate a new day." Mmmmm, it's time for breakfast. The children have many different kinds of breakfasts to start their day. Some have porridge, some have pancakes while others have churros or toast. "Hot sweet tea with plenty of milk" is a good way to top it off. Eight little girls with smiley impish faces are getting ready to head to school. Some children only have to walk a short way to school while others have to cross a river using a cable. Riding a bus or hopping on a bus is a very easy way to get to school!

At school it is time to get serious. Children around the world read, write, have music lessons, write math problems on the board, work on their science projects and dabble in arts and crafts. Of course everyone seems to love recess and lunch. In the afternoon there's more learning to do and then "kids stand up, clean up and head for home any way they can." Some children aren't done when school is out. They have to work, play, do homework, finish chores and then think . . . about "what's for dinner?" Of course everyone has something that's a bit different than the next person. When the sun sets it's time for family and then time to get to bed. Sleep well, for the next day will come soon!

This is a beautiful pictorial book that captures the daily lives of children around the world. Despite their differences, on some level they are all alike. As the author states, "Kids go to school, they play, they spend time with their families. This book represents one day, from sunrise to sunset, around the world-a day we share together." The photographs are stunning and very appealing. They capture everything from impish grins to beaming smiles (no crying here!). In the back of the book each photograph is reproduced and has a location and most have a "story" underneath. There is also a map showing where the photographs were taken. This is a book that school children will be fascinated with. How did you spend your school days?

Get This Book!

I cannot think of a better way to express how I feel about it, other than to urge you to buy it or borrow it NOW. It is informative, educational, poignant, heart wrenching, jolly, lighthearted--the photos are beyond words.

To actually see how children around the globe spend their day--just amazing. it will make the American youngster sit up and take an interest, that's for sure.

I read this aloud to my kids. Then they wanted to individually page through the book and look at the pictures. Then they wanted to look at the last few pages of the book which tell where each picture was taken. It was bedtime so I made them go to sleep, but I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow they're eager to look on a globe to find where each picture is from. Excellent photos, and although the faces and places look different, the book emphasizes similarities in our day-to-day lives.

Anyone contemplating involvement in an employment tribunal, whether practitioner or litigant, should read this book, or at least have it to hand for reference. Indispensible for the practitioner, its clarity and readability make it immediately accessible, either for those interested in bringing their own cases before employment tribunals, (see Chapter 2 `Getting advice'), or those who would prefer to brief counsel. Whether you're a practitioner or not, this book, published by Bloomsbury Professional, is an excellent guide to the ways in which tribunals operate and the powers they have at their disposal.

The authors, Payne, White and Dixey, all members of the specialist employment law team at 5 Essex Court, bring, literally, a wealth of experience and indeed a refreshingly logical approach to tackling the often formidable challenges of tribunals. As they point out, employment law is a complex area and is fast becoming more so as employment tribunals continually become more popular as a means of resolving employment disputes.

If you have a mind to represent yourself over an employment issue, remember that legal aid is not available to you and, although you should receive every assistance whilst the tribunal is in progress, you will certainly benefit from outside help and advice, particularly points contained in this book.

As pointed out by the authors, `a party who displays an accurate knowledge of practice and procedure and sets out its position in a clear and persuasive way, has a head start when communicating with the tribunal, whether orally or in writing. This book is intended to assist in that process.'

For ease of use, there is a detailed table of contents, index and glossary, plus extensive tables of statutes, statutory instruments and cases and EC material. A Delightful Addition

Trix Woodcutter never really interested me until now. I was always more interested in the rest of the Woodcutters, Sunday, Saturday, Friday and the others. Reading Trixter has changed all of that. I fell quickly in love with the part fey boy. Even though Trixter is a novella it felt as full as any of Alethea's other books.

As the story opens we are introduced to Trix as he is escaping from his family after bewitching their food. We then get to experience the flood that Saturday created from yet another point of view, Trix's. Seeing the same flood from three different points of view could easily grow boring, but Alethea Kontis re-imagines it each time in a new and creative way so that I've never been tired of reading it.

We then follow Trix on a wild adventure as he travels to reach his dead mother, spurned on by visions of her. As he makes his way he meets many strange and wonderful creatures and goes through his own tests and trials, growing along the way. This book more than others had a feel of being it's own fairy tale. The others have always incorporated many different fairy tales, but Trix's journey felt like an entirely new one of it's own.

Trixter holds the same delight and charm as the other books in the Woodcutter series introducing readers to tales both new and old. It delights and fascinates and embodies Trix's personality to the letter. Both new and old characters are introduced and I hope to see more from many of them in the future. This story holds key plot points to the rest of the series, and I can see that the Woodcutter series is building into something much larger than I'd originally anticipated. This book is definitely not one to be missed.

I just re-read this for the second time after reading Ms. Kontis first two books to read them in chronological order.

The books are fast paced and wonderfully written. I yearn to learn more about the world that she has spun in the Woodcutter Sisters series. Trixter has temporarily satisfied my desire for more experiences in their world. I love that there are real consequences to ones actions that seem to be missing in "modern" a.k.a. Disney fairy tales. The lessons taught in the books are realistic even in their fantastical nature.
Thank You Ms. Kontis for writing a world I want to know more about.

P.S. I hope one day when you've finished the Woodcutter Sisters stories that you will write the stories of Seven and her sisters, Peter and Jack and others that we get a glimpse of in this world you've spun. Whether they be short stories, novels, novellas, poems or any other variation of story telling I long to know more. You are a true wordsmith!

Trix's adventures begin...

I was so excited to find out more about Trixter! Frequently I find myself drawn to supporting characters. I love it when they get a chance to shine. You don't have to have read the other Woodcutter books before this one, it would give some history though.
Trixter has a grand adventure, meets many fantastic people and creatures and learns a lot about himself.
I look forward to the next Trix adventure.

Compelling Study of Literary Effects

I'm a fiction writer and poet who rarely reads literary criticism. I'm of the generation that was brought up on the joy-killing exegeses of the new criticism. And the joy-killing post-structuralists debase art by abusing it in the service of other concerns. But Clune's book is essentially about literary aesthetics and the mechanisms of literary effects, which interest me and which I find to be a noble goal of literary scholarship. Unlike most works of literary scholarship these days, Clune's book is readable, compelling, impressive in its breadth and not overly bogged down by jargon.

Outstanding

Wonderful cookbook! The writing, photos, and organization are top-notch. Overall, working with the "Handbook" is like having a friend teaching and helping out in the kitchen. As noted in the first review, the book is about way more than just sandwiches - some history, family stories, the hunt for perfect bahn mi bread, and best of all, new ways of thinking about food. Ms Nguyen breaks down the delicious bahn mi sandwich into simple elements - crunch of the crust, softness of the crumb, a bit of fat, a umami blast, unctuous fillings, cool and crisp veggie toppings - in a way that I was able to carry over into my other cooking. I was thinking of her meatball bahn mi as I tweaked my usual spaghetti with meatballs recipe for dinner last night - adding finely chopped cilantro stems to the meat, coating the meatballs with panko, and a dash of anchovy paste to the sauce. I bring this up to show how this is a little book that makes one's culinary imagination take flight, as a great cookbook should.

More down-to-earth, Ms Nguyen also gives myriad little kitchen hints that I found immediately useful - how to keep cilantro and how to cut it to stay fresh, squeeze quick pickles after salting to get them crisp, how to refresh bread. Not to mention how many of her recipes can be simply transposed onto a bed of rice noodles or lettuce for a delicious meal. If you love to cook, then don't pass up this book!

banh mi handbook delivers the yum!

I've been a fan of the author, following her lovely and delicious blog for some time. This book follows through on what I love about her work -- it's accessible for a home cook, the photography is delightful, the writing is clear, and I'm eager to get in the kitchen and try things out for me and my family.

This book features recipes for omnivores, meat-eaters, and vegetarians. Also, because of the way the book is structured, one could easily turn many of these sandwich fillings into main dishes for a non-sandwich meal. In my family, we eat a lot of rice, and I'll definitely be serving things like Crispy Drunken Chicken, Shrimp in Caramel Sauce, and Maggi Steaks with or without bread.

But the bread! She includes a recipe for banh mi rolls, but I haven't got to try it yet. When the weather cools down, I'll give it a try. It's written for a heavy-duty stand mixer, which I do not have, but Notes include instructions on how to work it by hand. Probably it would be a bit imposing for someone without a mixer or some bread-making experience; it is not, however, more complicated-looking than recipes I've done before, and it requires no special equipment beyond a spray bottle.

There is also a recipe for bao-like buns, or steamed bread, in the "alternative banh mi" chapter. That chapter also features a recipe for lettuce wraps and a salad, perfect for warmer weather meals.

Also included is a section on condiments, such as homemade mayo in several variations and some other sauces, and quick pickle recipes. They are refrigerator pickles and as such do not require any special canning techniques.

The section which may see the least use in my house is the one on cold cuts; this is not because the recipes look bad, however. To me they look amazing, and I'll be trying some of the sausages...but I'm probably the only one in the house who would love the pâté with chicken or pork, let alone the headcheese terrine. I'll probably make them anyway, at least once, since I'm the cook; if I'm lucky, my housemates will enjoy them too. People with more adventurous families or housemates may get more mileage out of them. (I slightly envy them.)

All in all, this is a cookbook I'm happy to have added to my collection, and I'm looking forward to adding its contents to my regular cooking rotation.

Ultimate Guide to Banh Mi

Sandwiches are my favorite things to eat. I love all kinds of sandwiches. When I came across this little gem, The Banh Mi Handbook: Recipes for Crazy-Delicious Vietnamese Sandwiches,
I just had to have it. I had no idea what banh mi was, however, the attractive design and the delicious appearing cover art immediately piqued my interest.

Banh mi is a “twist on the French snack of pate and bread”, created more than 100 years ago by Vietnamese street vendors. Banh mi sandwiches have their own kind of spreads and sauces, and can be created using a variety of meats or vegetables.

I love how this book provides much more than just recipes. It provides the story of these sandwiches along the way. The recipes are clearly written, though a little intimidating to the beginner, and beautifully photographed.

Andrea Nguyen, the books author, clearly lays out each sandwich component. The recipes start with the bread, how to make it at home, or what to look for at the store. Then it proceeds to the “spreads”. Nguyen goes into great detail to describe and explain how to make the one-of-a-kind sauces that banh mi is known for. Then she gets to the heart of the sandwich with individual sections devoted to cold cuts, chicken, seafood, pork and beef, and vegetarian.

This beautiful volume is a must have for any sandwich connoisseur. This book is complete in all things banh mi.

Dad was a little dull!

Dad just sat around reading the newspaper, so really, why not? Mom wasn't too pleased when she found out Dad had been traded off. The amusing part is that all the other neighborhood kids kept trading him around too, because he really wasn't all that interesting. I thought this would be a good book to read to my 5 year old grandson, but he didn't find it funny. He thought it was just mean to trade off Dad! The book was well written and I think many children would actually like the concept!

Absolutely terrific.My two girls (aged 3 and 7) want this as their bedtime story every night. The younger one "reads" it to us (even though she can't read) by memorizing large chunks and describing the great illustrations.

Silliness and fun for the early grades.

The young ones should enjoy this silliness -- just hope they don't get any ideas about trading you for goldfish or a birdhouse or silly masks.

Neil Gaiman always delivers and the art by Dave McKean is an amusing mixture, somewhat collage-like (sorry, I don't know much about art techniques, I just know when I really like art that also helps move the story along).

A well written book that a chemical engineer can use. A great companion book with Byrds Transport Phenomena and The Chemical Engineers handbook. Written from the perspective of design of chemical processes and applicable to other fields as well, such as physics, biochemistry, food science ect. Covers economic aspects and safety issues and general engineering design considerations. Not outdated.
