Johnson seeks to fill this void by offering a comprehensive look at the development, beliefs, and practices of Candomblé and exploring its transformation from a secret society of slaves--hidden, persecuted, and marginalized--to a public religion that is very much a part of Brazilian culture. Johnson traces this historical shift and locates the turning point in the creation of Brazilian national identity and a public sphere in the first half of the twentieth century.
His major focus is on the ritual practice of secrecy in Candomblé. Like Vodou and Santeria and the African Yoruba religion from which they are descended, Candomblé features a hierarchic series of initiations, with increasing access to secret knowledge at each level. As Johnson shows, the nature and uses of secrecy evolved with the religion. First, secrecy was essential to a society that had to remain hidden from authorities. Later, when Candomblé became known and actively persecuted, its secrecy became a form of resistance as well as an exotic hidden power desired by elites. Finally, as Candomblé became a public religion and a vital part of Brazilian culture, the debate increasingly turned away from the secrets themselves and toward their possessors. It is speech about secrets, and not the content of those secrets, that is now most important in building status, legitimacy and power in Candomblé.
Offering many first hand accounts of the rites and rituals of contemporary Candomblé, this book provides insight into this influential but little-studied group, while at the same time making a valuable contribution to our understanding of the relationship between religion and society.

Secrets, Gossip, and Gods Review

Although this book did include some worthy information on the Candomble subject, it entirety contained numerous lengthy definitions of what exactly a secret is, rather explore the subject any deeper. I personally was very disappointed with this author, gilding his lack of information contained in this book with an extensive vocabulary.

A wonderful addition to any library!!!

One of the best books that I could find in English on Candomble.
The book is an amazing piece of scholastic work conducted by a once relectant initiate of Nago-Ketu Nation and surveys the history, practices, theology, ritualism and cosmology of Candomble and the role of the Terreiro in historical and contemporary Brazilian society.
There are many things that I had issues with.....the title of the book being one of them.....but by far, it is the most substantial piece of work that has been published in English targeted in a non-sensationalist way for the non-brazilian public.
This thought provoking piece of work has led me to look internally and externally for answers to questions raised in this forum, and has also allowed me to formulate my own questions......
In any case, the book is worth adding to any library and especially of value to those individuals interested in African Based Diasporic religion/spirituality in Brazil.

Simply a MUST read

This is a novel about a man who is simply searching for the meaning of life and takes in every aspects of life that some people would take for granted and looks at them in a different light. This book is highly intellectual and I believe everyone can relate to it. You may want to read it twice depending on how old you are since it is about life experiences, either way it is good to read it twice because I'm sure you will enjoy it and see more the second time you read it. I read this book in college and am about to read it again. There is also a movie too but it is in Spanish I'm not sure if they have it in English but it would be great if they did.

Book itself is great, but buy a different edition

Some other reviewers here have said the same thing, but this edition is not worth the $8 they charge for it, spend a few extra dollars and get the catedra edition. The book is printed out the day you order it and it is a pretty low quality book.

Unamunu’s best, a a classic of the Spanish Literature

Niebla (Mist) by Miguel de Unamunu

In this 1914 novel, Unamunu establishes himself as one of the greatest writers of the Spanish generation of 1898.

Augusto Pérez is a man that is well off but ever since her mother died two years ago, he can’t forget the last words she said: “Augusto, get married.”

One day, as he walks the streets, he meets Eugenia Domingo de Arco, a piano teacher, and falls madly in love. As he starts to court Eugenia, Augusto discovers that she has a boyfriend, Mauricio.

But falling in love with Eugenia opens in Augusto an unknown reaction: the feeling of love: so now he loves all women. Augusto falls in love with his servant Rosario, and also with Liduvina his cook—who is married to the butler, Domingo.

Meanwhile, Augusto's best friend, Víctor, starts writing a “Nívola” or a novel that breaks all the rules of fiction. Víctor is shocked by the news that his wife, Elena, is pregnant after 12 years of marriage. So he deals with it by writing. Víctor tells Augusto to marry many women: Eugenia for her imagination—to stimulates his brain; Rosario to stimulates his heart, and Liduvina (his cook), to stimulates his stomach. Because according to Unamunu: “The head, the heart, and the stomach are the three faculties that people call intelligence, feelings, and will.”

Eugenia is an orphan and lives with her aunt, Ermelinda, and uncle, Fermín. One day as Augusto walks by Eugenia’s address: 58 Avenue of the Alameda, Emelinda’s birdcage falls and Augusto catches it, thus saving Pichín, Emelinda’s canary. Ever since, the aunt and uncle try to break up Eugenia and Mauricio so that Augusto marries their niece.

Pressured, Eugenia gives an ultimatum to Mauricio: either find work and marry her, or get lost. Mauricio does not wish to work, so Eugenia is now free to court Augusto. Meanwhile, Augusto has made a pass at Rosario, so now he finds himself in a love triangle with both women—with a decision to make.

Augusto chooses Eugenia--thus wedding date is set. But Eugenia fools Augusto by making him find a job for Mauricio and escaping with him a few days before the wedding.

Feeling rejected, Augusto considers suicide, but then decides he needs to go to Salamanca to discuss his suicide with the author of the book.

Unamunu, thus, becomes a character of his own “Nívola” and proceeds to tell Augusto that he can’t commit suicide: “because you don’t exist...you are, poor Augusto, only a product of my fiction and the readers that share this lecture; and all your feelings and adventures were written by me—you’re nothing but a character in a novel—or ‘Nívola.’”

But Augusto fights back and questions Unamunu’s existence: “perhaps you are the fictional being, the one that does not exist, neither alive or dead...You are but the vehicle so that my story is known to the world...”

This makes Unamunu angry and he decides that rather than let Augusto commit suicide, Unamunu will kill him himself. Realizing that Unamunu has the power to kill him, Augusto changes his mind and now wishes to live. Augusto threatens Unamunu: “God will one day stop dreaming you! You will also die, even if you don’t want to, and all those who read this story will die, each and everyone of them.”

Augusto returns home, and just before he dies, he sends a telegram to Salamanca to Unamunu: “you win. I’m dead. Augusto Pérez.” So Augusto dies, and his dog, Orfeo, dies with him.

Unamunu, in his novel Niebla. Creates a world of dreams that becomes a tragicomic part of reality. It is considered Unamunu’s best, a a classic of the Spanish Literature.

About the Author

Dr Gautam Mehta qualified from Southampton University in 2001 and underwent postgraduate training at Hammersmith, Royal Free, St Mary's, and Charing Cross Hospitals. He was the youngest appointee to the North West Thames Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine registrar rotation, and is currently a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow at the Institute of Hepatology, University College London.
Gautam is widely published and regularly teaches on MRCP PACES preparation courses. He has an extensive background in medical education, having completed a Fellowship in Medical Education with the London Deanery, and undertaking the Masters in Clinical Education programme at the Institute of Education. Gautam is also an examiner for medical finals at Barts & the London Medical School.
Dr Bilal Iqbal is currently Specialist Registrar in Cardiology at Hammersmith Hospital, London.
Dr Deborah Bowman is currently Associate Dean (Widening Participation) and Senior Lecturer in Medical Ethics and Law at the Centre for Medical and Healthcare Education

A Great Book

It is only that I read this simplified French version, I feel the great the author is.

On the other hand, this simplified version is not as good as the simplified French versions from this publisher, CIDEB. Perhaps the book is too great and too good to simplify.

The background information in this book is useful. More French words are not usually seen in modern time.

Leadership explained in a way that can be applied

This is an exceptional book for a leader of any type; beginner to senior executive; and also for those that have not yet realised they are leaders. I believe it to be sound training material and have based my company’s leadership development program on this framework, together with that of Verne Harnish’s The Rockefeller Habits, and Jack Daly’s sales methodologies.

I have studied the theory of leadership at work, at university and in my own time over the past 35 years. It is my generalised observation that the more theoretical the teacher or material; then the more likely it is that an inversely proportional relationship exists between what is being taught and the teacher’s experience in positions of leadership. The same can be said about the ability of heavy theoretical texts and they applicability to the workplace.

Cantwell was an exceptional leader in the Australian Army and his presence in a room is one that gives others a feeling of being near a remarkable person. He was always promoted well ahead of his peers and in 2006 was the first Australian to be promoted on the battlefield to Major General since WW2. He is an experienced leader.

He was also a soldier before being an officer and as I recall reading elsewhere, the youngest sergeant in the Australian Army at one time prior to becoming an officer. You could therefore be forgiven for believing this to have a military focus and application; and you would be wrong. After having recently heard Cantwell speak at the book’s launch at the Australian National University it was clear that his focus is on developing leaders in the private and public sectors. While I am sure his framework of leadership is still applicable to a military audience, it was clear that he has transformed his delivery style to that which meets the needs of a non-military audience.

The book is very easy to read, it is not full of heavy concepts and offers clear advice. Its central tenant is that to be a true leader you must be authentic. Anyone that has worked will benefit from this book because you can immediately relate to the five items in each of the five areas within Cantwell’s leadership framework. This is the case because you will have seen them practised well or practised poorly. This is the book’s strength because we can relate to its words; we can learn from it, and then examine the issues in a deeper way at our current workplace by putting them into practice. It also levels an experienced leader and gives you the opportunity to navel gaze back over your leadership experiences and consider Cantwell’s leadership framework against the way you demonstrate leadership today.

I forecast more to come from Cantwell on leadership; perhaps a program of social media, video casts and Cantwell’s presence on the speaking circuit. It is a must read, a quick read, a clear read and very motivational.

A leadership masterclass from a genuine leader

I was keen to read this book after reading the author's previous work "Exit Wounds" which has a string of well-deserved 5-star reviews. This is a different work, a "how to" guide on leadership, based on Cantwell's 40 years as a leader in the army (he rose from private to 20star general) and in post-disaster recovery. It contains dozens of actionable tips and techniques for both established and aspiring leaders. I especially loved the many examples from the real world, of how to lead. It is an easy read, well laid out and accessible. The book has received outstanding reviews from prominent leaders, and I can see why. I wish I'd had this book when I was learning the business of leadership. Highly recommended.

Thoughtful Leadership Principles

I've never met Major General Cantwell, but after reading his book, I hope to. He offers a well thought out leadership philosophy applicable to any aspiring leader. Being a military leader myself, I hope to apply his insights during my remaining days in uniform. He goes beyond 'generalized leadership theories' and gives tangible examples of principles worth thinking about. Well worth the read.
