About the Author
Greg Nellis is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Professor Nellis received his MS and PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Nellis is a member of ASHRAE, ASME, IIR and CSA and carries out applied research that is related to energy systems with a focus on refrigeration technology. Professor Nellis has published more than 40 journal papers. Professor Nellis's focus has been on graduate and undergraduate education and he has received the Polygon and Pi Tau Sigma awards for excellence in teaching.
Professor Klein is the Bascom Ouweneel Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has been on the faculty at Wisconsin since 1977. He is associated with the Solar Energy Laboratory and has been involved in many studies of solar and other types of energy systems. He is the author or co-author of more than 150 publications relating to the analysis of energy systems. Professor Klein's current research interests are in solar energy systems and applied thermodynamics and heat transfer. In addition, he is also actively involved in the development of engineering computer tools for both instruction and research. He is the primary author of a modular simulation program (TRNSYS), a solar energy system design program (F-CHART), a finite element heat transfer program (FEHT) and a general engineering equation solving program (EES). Professor Klein is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); and the American Solar Energy Society (ASES).

Best Textbook I've Ever Owned

I've had a lot of good, bad, and everything in between when it comes to text books. This book is by far one of the best if not the best I have owned.
Reading it makes you feel like the author is sitting down and talking with you, from simple concepts to complex derivations. It can get very technical for all the people that like to read between the lines and learn the complex theory and proofs, but at the same time it has many examples and applicable information as well if you like to skip the complex jargon and get to solving problems.
This is one of the few engineering text books I have actually completed all the reading for the course. I liked it so much, I read chapters we didn't even study.
It can be used for an introductory heat transfer course as well as an advanced course. They actually layout which chapters would cover different types of courses. Usually we would read the first half of a chapter and then the very advanced stuff would come in for Masters students or motivated type.
It also makes a lot of use out of the software program EES with actual examples. It would be very difficult to solve some of the complex problems without a simultaneous equation solver such as EES, especially problems that require iteration (LMTD problems for heat exchangers). They also do a good job of solving hand-written problems with step-by-step instructions (No, "how did they get that number?" issues for me).
Anyway, I highly recommend this book. I plan on buying their Thermodynamics text book when it is released since my old book was horrific. Also, the book looks like the Bible or something really important. Just a plain front and kind of short and fat, it will look good on your bookshelf.

a good heat transfer textbook

It's a very good heat transfer textbook. It's well written, readable, and very through. It can be pretty dense. It has a *lot* of good worked example problems and examples of how to use software packages like EES, Maple, and Matlab. The software examples are helpful especially because they show how to work all the way through tricky problems, not just details of how to use specific commands.

An exemplary work in engineering and heat transfer

This book is definitely the best textbook I have seen to date in heat transfer (Keep in mind that I have read books from Bejan, Cengel, Incropera, and Holaman). This review is intended to correct (in my opinion) an inaccurate statement made by one of the reviewers about this book:
I respect your opinion about the book not having enough real life examples, but come on..., we know that your statement is not valid at all. This book has the MOST real life examples in one textbooks and if you run into a heat transfer problem , chances that you will see an example that EXACTLY fits that problem is pretty high. How do you define real life examples? And what is your definition of it is important. Perhaps you were seeking for examples in another subject and could not find it? So don't blame it on this book. Also anyone who says the software used in the textbook is all EES and so forth... Have you ever paid some attention to computer programming as an engineer? I mean again ,,, come on, If you read a code for one specific software, you should be able to apply that to any software of your choice. It's really that simple. Plus I strongly believe that having the code not only helps you with the coding of it necessarily, but it helps you think logical through the problem statement and the solution provided by that assignment.
In the end, I strongly recommend this book and I hope to see this textbook in all universities across the nation pretty soon. The only in depth analysis of a subject in engineering...
