It's clear from reading this memoir by folksinger and social activist Richie Havens that this is one '60s survivor who hasn't become jaded. They Can't Hide Us Anymore (the title comes from a remark Havens made when he opened the Woodstock festival) traces Havens's journey from Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant district (where his musical skills aided him in staving off unwanted gang attention) to Greenwich Village at the cusp of the early-'60s folk boom. There, the positive-thinking artist/gadfly/aspiring entertainer crossed paths with everyone from Bob Dylan to Wilt Chamberlain. Then it was on to Woodstock and international (if fairly fleeting) fame. As befits an unapologetic counterculture adherent, Havens's memoir/life guide doesn't adhere to a tight structure. One minute he's offering a hasty guitar lesson, the next he's making passing reference to an encounter with the ghost of Aaron Burr at New York's Cafe Bizarre. He devotes as many words to unknown pals who've made a positive impression on him as he does to encounters with the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Some may find the fanciful flow of Havens's narrative disconcerting, but it's clearly the way the man has lived his life. The first time Havens played a "real" coffeehouse in Greenwich Village, he credited the best song in his repertoire to an unknown folksinger named Gene Michaels. Afterward, a young man came up to him in tears, congratulating him on his beautiful rendition of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." The tearful young man, it turned out, was Bob Dylan. Ever since he launched his career in Greenwich Village in the '60s, African-American/Native American folksinger Havens (a native Brooklynite) has assumed the role of the big-hearted ally of the underdog. It should come as little surprise, therefore, that much of his autobiography trumpets the talents of artists such as Fred Neil, the little-known singer/songwriter who scored his only hit with "Everybody's Talkin' at Me," penned for the film Midnight Cowboy. The tendency to focus on the obscure typifies the bookAand Havens, too. He denies any regrets that the highlight of his career came earlyAwhen he opened Woodstock in 1969Aclaiming that money and fame are secondary to him. Some readers may lament the absence of superstar gossip, particularly about Dylan, but these reminiscences, mostly of the '60s scene, steer clear of such things. He fondly remembers his heady Village days, describing endless all-night hootenannies and song-swapping sessions. Guitarists will especially appreciate the detailed description, with accompanying photographs, of Havens's unique open-tuning barre-chord method of playing. This is a generous book by an undeniably generous spirit.

While Havens lacks the incendiary force that propelled Hendrix into rock'n'roll divinity, his blending of several musical styles, his social activism, and his genuine sense of humanity have made him an important cultural touchstone. In this memoir, he takes us from Greenwich Village, where he learned his chops, to the historic 1965 Newport Folk Festival and to Woodstock, where he played for hours while other acts struggled through the fans to reach the stage. His recollections of brilliant but forgotten singer/songwriters may lead readers to search out the music that mattered, and his memories of the doomed victims of "show business disease," like Hendrix and Janis Joplin, make us realize how lucky we are to have someone still with us to tell the tale. Recommended for all public libraries.

Havens is a Master!!!

I've been a long time fan of Richie Havens and his music but never realized his genius in writing. Keep a computer or ipad nearby to read more on all the references to places, things and names as he teases your appetite to learn more. If you lived in the 60's, and 70's you'll love finding out the "rest of the story" as he grew up in the Village and became friends with the most unlikely artists. If you have been a Havens fan, read the book. You'll love him even more if that's possible.

Meeting Richie Havens at the Cellar Door

I was Richie's guest at the Cellar Door,years ago. He sat at my table during the intermission. We spent almost 15 minutes talking about ways one could attain spiritual enlightment if one wanted to know God badly enough. He knew I was on the devotional path in this lifetime. Inventing the Way of the Samurai examines the development of the 'way of the samurai' - bushido; - which is popularly viewed as a defining element of the Japanese national character and even the 'soul of Japan'. Rather than a continuation of ancient traditions, however, bushido; developed from a search for identity during Japan's modernization in the late nineteenth century. The former samurai class were widely viewed as a relic of a bygone age in the 1880s, and the first significant discussions of bushido at the end of the decade were strongly influenced by contemporary European ideals of gentlemen and chivalry. At the same time, Japanese thinkers increasingly looked to their own traditions in search of sources of national identity, and this process accelerated as national confidence grew with military victories over China and Russia.

Inventing the Way of the Samurai considers the people, events, and writings that drove the rapid growth of bushido, which came to emphasize martial virtues and absolute loyalty to the emperor. In the early twentieth century, bushido; became a core subject in civilian and military education, and was a key ideological pillar supporting the imperial state until its collapse in 1945. The close identification of bushido; with Japanese militarism meant that it was rejected immediately after the war, but different interpretations of bushido; were soon revived by both Japanese and foreign commentators seeking to explain Japan's past, present, and future. This volume further explores the factors behind the resurgence of bushido, which has proven resilient through 130 years of dramatic social, political, and cultural change.

About the Author

Oleg Benesch is Anniversary Research Lecturer in History, specializing in the history of early modern and modern Japan. Before arriving at the University of York, Dr Benesch was Past & Present Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London. He has spent almost six years living and researching in Japan, including two years each at Hitotsubashi University and Reitaku University in Tokyo. Dr Benesch's publications and teaching interests cover a variety of fields, including Japanese intellectual, religious, and social history, Chinese intellectual history, as well as the transnational history of modern East Asia. He has presented his research findings at academic conferences and invited lectures throughout East Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia.

It is an academic work though, so expect it to challenge you. It's not the kind of book you casually read before you go to bed. If you're looking for a broader understanding of the Samurai and their beliefs that's good but a lot easier to read you should get "When Buddhists Attack: The Curious Relationship between Zen and the Marial Arts" by Jeffery Mann instead of this book.

For the academics and those who are serious about cultivating a deeper understanding the way of the warrior: you need to read this book. If you can't afford it, call your library have them buy it. It's really good.

This book is intolerable

Maybe it's just me (I have no marketing background but desperately want to learn for my start-up) but I cannot get hardly anything out of this text. I have tried very hard to tread through the writing and learn something useful but chapter after chapter seems to be the exact same thing... overly wordy, rambling & unnecessarily academic writing with no comprehensible message behind it, no strategies I can apply to my own business and no organization that I can make sense of. Feels almost like I'm reading a paper a college student BSed their way through with a whole bunch of long words and cryptic sentences in order to sound impressive. What a rip-off. I paid $70 for this and it has been the most useless book I've paid for in my research process (and I've read 16 other books thus far to help me with my venture).

The only reason I'm giving this two stars and not one star is that out of the first six chapters I've read, two of them actually made sense. One was on International Marketing and did a very good job explaining the technology limitations of other countries and the ways foreign citizens adapt to this and use technology. This is actually very helpful information and I'm going to use it. The second was on the legal and ethical aspects of using the internet. It gave an extremely concise explanation with lots of info and it was easily understandable. Unfortunately, I've read a chapter like this over and over and over again in pretty much every e-business book I've picked up so far so it's getting old.

Good Supplement - Possible Recommendation

I teach AP CSA and have looked at all of the most current AP prep books in hopes to finding a quality one for all of my students to use and recommend to buy. I just received my book today and spent the past hour scanning it. First, when I received the package and opened the book, the first 15 pages had their corner folded, which is not acceptable when shipping a brand new book. The topics are laid out well with thorough explanations of concepts, but not necessarily all of the detail required. Each topic has basic and advanced questions. Advanced are definitely worthy of AP-like questions and the basics; some are, some aren't, but the basics can be a great way of leading in to the advanced. The practice exams at the back look great as well and I appreciate the free response practice items throughout - this is an area this book thrives over others.

In short - if I am going to recommend a book for students...
Explanations - Barron's 7th edition - sometimes a little more confusing, but has more detail or 5 Steps to a 5 - easier to read, but you will miss some key minor details.
Multiple Choice - Barron's - there are more, harder, and detailed explanations for each section.
Free Response - 5 Steps to a 5 - they have a lot of early ones to ease students into it and explain very nicely results for an "open-ended" type answer.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. I would love more than a handful of multiple choice questions per topic. I also do not appreciate having pages bent before I even open it.

An excellent resource

The authors really have tried to include everything that could help a modern student prepare for the AP exam for Computer Science A. My teen will be studying independently for the exam after taking a year long course and the tools included in the book are extremely helpful.

First of all, the book recommend that you use McGraw Hill's test planning app to customize your study schedule. The app gives you a day by day schedule and also extra practice questions.

To figure out where you stand, you take a diagnostic exam that is half the length of the actual exam. This allows the student to figure out areas of weakness which they can focus on in their preparation for exam day.

Another thing my teen likes about the book is that there are two levels of questions for each subject area - basic and advanced. Books that are filled with only advanced questions can be intimidating and this book does manage to make the topics seem quite accessible.

Beyond that the book has all the standard topics - structure of the exam, each topic explained, test taking strategies, explanations for multiple choice as well as free response problems, Java code Solutions, 3 practice tests and errors to avoid.

All in all, this a well planned an thorough guide written with today's student in mind.

Lots of great information

First, let me say that this is for my son, as he is the one taking the AP course and I thought this book will be helpful. We've only had it a week but so far he is enjoying it... or 'enjoying' it as much as a kid enjoys during doing work during summer break! Since he won't be taking the actual exam for quite a while, I can't yet say if it helps his scores on the AP but I do believe that if he does all the book has in it, he'll definitely fare much better than without it!
It has 3 practice exams as well as a free app to customize his study schedule. This is incredibly useful, as my son easily gets off track so every little organizational idea or app truly helps!
Inside the book it is broken into many 'steps'. Step 1 is to set up the study program as well as what you need to know, and frequently asked questions about the exam. Step 2 is to determine your test readiness and encourages doing the diagnostic exam. Step 3 is all about strategies for success and step 4 is to review the knowledge you need to score high, going into various concepts as what is java, software developer, OOP, Choosing your IDE, and others. Here the book really dives into the information and covers many concepts and breaks down the chapters in the framework of these concepts. Finally, step 5 is titled Building your Test-Taking Confidence.

Also incredibly handy and useful is the appendix. It is filled with goodies, such as a quick reference guide and list of keywords in Java as well as other aspects in addition to an area that lists other online resources.

Both my son and I are excited to utilize this book and I do hope it is truly helpful for him! It looks like a good, well-organized book that will help keep him on track and aid in a successful year and exam!

Just as Good the Second Time

The most important tool of a photographer is located behind the viewfinder. Photographers need just as much instruction in using their brain and soul for photography as they need to be taught about exposure, focus and composition.

David duChemin’s book is aimed at doing just that. This book speaks of developing photographers’ vision. Although he mentions from time to time such concepts as say, depth of field, the discussion is related to how to use these concepts to express vision. Unfortunately, the shaping of the inner photographer is not as concise as setting an f-stop. Instead the author talks about things like becoming one with the subject being photographed. (That’s not duChemin’s phrase; it belongs to a wildlife photographer’s lecture of years ago. At the time I thought he was crazy; now I try to commune with birds all the time.)

The author tells us that vision is his theme. He compares the conflict between vision and equipment and emphasizes the importance of using images to tell stories. He follows this with several chapters, ostensibly aimed at different genres, like people, places and culture, but all interwoven with finding the photographer within.

DuChemin’s points are illustrated with his excellent pictures that tell you as much about his vision as about the subject. On the other hand, the author doesn’t take himself too seriously, as when, after advising the reader of the diffraction dangers of shooting at f/22, he tells us that this is advice he rarely heeds.

When I read the first edition of this book I was bowled over. DuChemin articulated the undeveloped ideas that had been floating around inside my head. Since reading that book, I regularly think about my vision, and when asked what item of equipment I would like to get next for my photography, I always answer vision. I can’t compare the second edition to the first edition, but I can say that even though I’m familiar with the ideas in this edition, the author has reinforced the use of the most important tool in my photographic arsenal.

I can also suggest to you that paying attention to duChemin’s ideas about vision will not only make you a better photographer. It might make you a better person. (Don’t ask me to explain that statement.)

If you are a photographer and you haven’t read the first edition of this book, you need to read this edition. If you have read the first edition, you still need to read this edition.

A Thoughtful Picture

As I read this new edition I could see the changes in the author's work, already excellent, now even more outstanding. The book is not a technical one but shows a way of thinking and connecting with place and people. A truly insightful approach. Having read it it, I am sure it's effect will be to have me slow down and try to capture the spirit, the essence of the places I travel too. It is well worth reading.

If you're not familiar with David's work and you love making photographs

If you're not familiar with David's work and you love making photographs, you should. David's book Within the Frame is one of the best books on photography there is. You won't find a whole lot about f-stops and lens choices here because David is all about what, or who, is behind the camera and their vision. Find his website while you're at it because his blog in fantastic. I'm a photography instructor at the college level and this book is on my must read list for all my classes. Highly recommended!
